Default Heater control valve breaks, leads to parts interchange question.

Long story short-
On a drive Saturday and all of a sudden I'm blowing steam- the plastic throat on the heater control valve broke and some coolant was lost. Thankfully there was enough "meat" left on it so I could refit the hose and clamp good enough to get back home.
Sunday, I visited my good friend/ wizard mechanic and told my tale. Without moving he dug in a drawer(we were in his garage) and he produces the exact part and says "Here ya go. It's the same as on my Audi. They're garbage. I carry a spare in my car, plus I take them when I find them on junkyard runs. You're welcome to this one."
This leads me to wonder what other parts interchange? I know how the whole VW/Porsche/Audi system kinda sorta operated, but is there a guide book or some type of cross-reference regarding this subject? I can find Audis in local wrecking yards, but doubt I'll chance upon a 928 anytime soon. It would be nice to know what to look for ahead of time.

If you're worried about the durability of the HCV, buy a new one; it should last for many years and is only $15 from one of the BIG 3. Or, if you're really paranoid about it, there is NAPA part no. BK 6601410, which is an all-metal, direct replacement HCV that has been used successfully by several rennlisters.

Replace the hoses to - I know of a car that blew the short hose going to the HCV.

I'm sure that there are lots of parts that are interchangeable between VAG and Porsche...particularly from the 928 era. I don't know of a specific crossreference or list, but it would be a great thing to start.

The HCV is one example, but there are others. The obvious ones are things like bulbs, relays, hose clamps and fasteners. I believe the Temp II sensor is interchangeable with most modern era VAG products...I recall seeing a post on this some time back.

There are probably lots of others. I'll offer to compile and host a list on my website, if the info is forwarded. Since I own (and have owned) both Porsche and Audi models, I can attempt to validate some of the cross references.

This is not intended to discourage buying genuine Porsche parts, rather, it can suppliment regular supply lines...particularly when you need something in a hurry. There are some parts that jusyt make little sense to source through Porsche. Relays come to mind...not all, but some of them. I've seen price differences of 2-3x for the exact same Bosch part. I don't see the value add by Porsche adding another part number and facilitating through the supply chain, when I can get the same item at my local VAG dealer at a lower price. Just my view, of course.

I've been wondering exactly the same thing. About an hour ago, I was wondering if a Hollander Interchange manual would be worth the cost. I don't know how much foreign car data it has in it, as I've never seen one.

It's slow here at work today, so I was just about to build a database with all the info I could scavenge. I know there's some here on rennlist, I just haven't seen one clear point of collection.

If I can really collect any useful data & if there's really a need, I'd be happy to put what I compile on the web.
