Actually, Daimler-Benz built cars long before Hitler so they did not design and build all their original cars for him. If that is what you meant from your statement. There was no Mercedes, as a builder or designer of cars. That was the name of, I believe, a French ambassador's daughter who ordered a car from Daimler-Benz way back when and the name stuck to the cars. F Porsche designed and engineered vehicles for various manufacturers before Hitler came on the scene too. So you are wrong (strictly speaking) on both counts.

Glen,

You are correct. Her name was Mercedes Jelleneck (Spelling on last name?).. Anyway, a Jelleneck family member was at the Mille Miglia last year to celebrate Mercedes Benz history. Mercedes Benz was actually formed by Gottlieb Dimler and Karl Benz. They "invented" the car in Germany. The old car is in the museum in Stuttgart, and it still runs..

On hybriding the 928, why not if it floats your boat... Now, I personally think a FFRP 4.6 Cobra motor would be a very interesting sight in a 928 engine bay... (Track Beast for DE etc..) If you moddet it a bit, it woulf have 700RWHP, be 2500Lbs, and scare the bejesus out of all those innocent bystanders...

Well, just my $.02

Daimler, not Dimler, oh, and now it's Daimler-Chrysler instead of Daimler Denz AG.

I still stick to my story that all cars with a Porsche badge pre 928 are VW's.

And what if Studebaker had built the type 542 Porsche designed V-6 4 door sedan in 1954-1955. We would have had our own "American Porsche" ?? Long before most reading this were alive . The whole perception of things Porsche might have been quite different. Porsche they design 4 door economy sedans.??

Jim,

They built a 4 door sedan..... W124 Mercedes 500E.... They used to truck the bodies from Mercedes to Porsche for assembley.......

They also built wagons.... Audi RS2 Avant.....

Both very collectible cars..

Oh, and let's not forget the tractors......

In this case , Studebaker was to have built the car in South Bend ,Indiana USA . The prototype was built in Germany. John Z Delorean who was the engineer in charge at Studebaker at the time failed to appreciate the European flavor of the car. Studebaker was terribly short of money struggling to survive as the Auto industry consolidated in the USA. The" big three" had a some small domestic competition in the years after WWII the lack of new cars during the war years created huge demand which helped marginal companies survive for a while .

Would a Camaro with a Porsche engine still be a Chevy?

IMO...yes.

So if you take an AC Ace delete the 6 cylinder engine and install a Ford V-8 ? Is it then considered a Ford .......most seem to think so .... Cobra ! I for one think the engine is the most important thing in any car for without an engine it is simply a wagon or a cart. The Lister Jags (arguably one of the all time best looking sports racers) when repowered with a Chev V-8 became know as Lister-Chevys.

That's what it is.

Jellinek is the correct spelling.

Ferdinand Porsche at one time was a chief engineer at Daimler-Benz.

Tiger tanks and most of the other Kampfwagens were powered by Maybach.

The Tiger II tank had a Porsche turret as an option. Henschel got the large contract.

We drive German cars.

<<500E>>

Don't forget the father of the 500E....the old school AMG Hammer....which the 500E copied....personally I'm glad the Hammer & 500E came around, because they opened the door for the E55 AMG that we have today...& who doesn't like a comfortable 4 door automatic that runs a 12.4 1/4 with over 469hp bone stock!!! If I needed (& could afford) a 4 door that would be the ticket (or maybe an M5)

This months issue of Car Craft features a build up of a gen 3 aluminum ls1 GM crate engine. They dyno'd the engine to get baseline and were pretty shocked with the engine right out of the box (as was I). The engine weighed 480 pounds fully dressed (except alt, ac pump, p/s pump). It produced 401 HP right out of the box but more impressive to me was a minimum of 350 ft/lb of torque from 2500 RPM to 6100 RPM with a peak torque of 398! For $6100, you get the engine complete with distributerless ignition, fuel injection, cast headers AND a factor harness WITH engine management computer designed for custom installations. You have to add the accessories, a MAF sensor from an f-body as well as 2 oxygen sensors. But aftre that, you have a 400 hp engine that idles smooth, has instant throttle reponse and pulls like a freight train from 2500 RPM.

I don't know what our engines weigh but at one time I heard the LT-1 engine saved our cars 100 lbs in the nose. This LS-1 engine is a full 100 Lbs lighter than the LT-1 (so that would be a 200 lb savings to us). Also, to get those types of numbers from the gen2 LT-1, you would need a lumpy cam and you could forget about torque down low.

I'm impressed
