Is a Chevy Powered 928 Still a Porsche?

The answer is, it is still a Porsche. But it is a Porsche with a substantial modification. IMHO, as long as it's a positive change, ie more power, more roadholding, etc ... it is totally worthwhile. It's where you start dropping a mazda 4-cyl engine in that it starts becoming a mess ... Personally I think the 928 engines are wonderful creatures, but hey ... if an LT floats your boat ...

Pass the Hash, please!
For official PCA events -other than show- nah.
But then... sans a hood scoop ala NHRA, it would be the sHARk owners decision.
Economic arguements swing both ways with various and sundry valid points in each camp.
Now with the SC camp gaining strength, there is quite a bit of Baawahwwwwwww to be had
and if one were to be judicious with El Boosto Mundo one could expect a reasonable life span -perhaps even a reasonable head gasket lifespan- for the cost of , or, less than a 'seasoned' S-4 engine.
No one hacks, to badly, on our favorite French body kits. Racing seats shifter *****, wheels, light lens covers, extended fender well lips, suspension... all seems to have majority approval.
Ripping the guts out of a sHARk and banging it around a race course seems to be allowable.
And frankly... if the purists are going to argue that the Porsche Marque was intended to race then
it shouldn't matter wether you alter the look or powertrain and do what you want with the beast.
If you are serious about staying 'legal' don't modify it. Concours? I hope Jay Leno is backing you financially -for the $$$$- and that you have the mindset and circle of like minded sHARk pilot friends to sustain you.
If you have friends inthe right profession a chev or ford wouldn't be a bad financial decision.
Get the -programable- computer and harnesses out of a donor at the junk yard.
Dennis,
First a castigator of the Texas College Football progams and now ripping on Fomoco electronic/electrics ... where will it all end ...
If you accidentally hit the remote today and it changed from the Curb Appeal Channel to that channel where big people who get alot of money to keep bumping into each other you might have seen my home team 'the Burgh' playing a 'certain' away game......

John,
Missed the curb appeal show and your Pittsburg SteAlers. Was busy decoking a replacement turbo for the 931. I still smell like methylene chloride. The E in FORED was for the 928's electronics. I am getting calluses on my right thumb from spinning fuses.

We have really sick car taxation system in Finland. One feature of it is official list of percentages each part in the car represent. List is used when changing parts to check if tax needs to be payed again. Official view is car changes to totally new when exactly 50% of its parts are changed to either similar, modified or totally different parts. This must be most scientific system ever deviced for determing how original car is. According to it, engine represents 15% and for example gearbox 9% of cars total parts. So answer to the question is Porschev still Porsche is: it is still 85% Porsche.

Hey, llots of interesting thoughts. I must say I should re-word part of what I siad. I said that a chevy in a 928 would seem more of what a 928 should be, that's in my own opinion, not in a general way.
That said. I must also say that I do love the M28. it's the smoothest engine I've ever had in a car. It's been totaly reliable in amechanical sense. only electical issues and they were very minor (3 seasons now) and I wouldn't just rip it out as long as it was working well mechanically. I must say that the extra space in the engine bay was huge with the Chevy motor. It makes me wonder if the GM block is 90 degrees or not.
Are there any Renegae converts out there who can give us the real world experience, (Adam & Rick, please jump in if you're online...) - Ruf

924 = Audi engine
356 = VW engine
One of the greatest sports cars ever started in the UK, ended up with a Ford under the hood.

Hacker Hacker Hacker ... audi engine maybe, but tuned by Porsche. And the 356 didn't have a VW engine. At that time in Porsche's history, a VW engine WAS a Porsche engine and a VW WAS a Porsche. The first VW beetle didn't have a VW crest, it had a Porsche crest.
So the first beetle was a true Porsche.

Ok the 914 had a VW engine then. So if my friend who is a Ford engineer tunes my VW it's a Ford tuned VW?

If he builds it from scratch using VW parts and Ford engineering ... I'd call it a Ford. Besides ... the first Beetle was a Porsche. Hey Hacker ... the first VW Beetle was a Porsche.
Not only that, but Porsche designed and built VW ... so ultimately, VW is just another member of the Porsche family. PLUS: Ferdinand Porsche designed and built all his original cars for adolf hitler. So did Mercedes and Benz. So I guess we are all driving **** mobiles
Besides Hacker ... the first VW Beetle ... Dude ... it was a Porsche. Long before any other Porsche 928, 911 and 944
