Default How do I replace the screen above the Air Flow Sensor?

While I had the airbox off to replace the heater valve I noticed that the screen above the air flow sensor was torn. I can't figure out how to replace it. Should I just remove it entirely? I thought about taping or glueing some screen in the airbox itself over the air inlet. Since it is already torn I'm not sure it is doing any good the way it is.

Thanks

there is a small diameter wire snap ring in a groove which retains the screen in place. Some "racers" remove the screen in the hope of "better" air flow I do not recall the result but it makes the hot wire filament more vulnerable.

Not sure about your question. My '85 is held in by a circlip. Simple to r&r w/ new. You could probably mend the tear with needle and temperature resistant thread if you don't care about esthetics. Engineers need to jump in here with suggestions. Home Depot has window screen patches, but again, don't know about temp tolerance; I think these are made of vinyl; if it melts and gets sucked in -- not good. The Bosche FI manual suggests (disclaimer: the screen is there to protect the innards from bug guts) you can add several hp by removing top and bottom as these screens are major air flow disrupters at a bottle neck.

Tim,
The Screen and the ciclip are available from Porsche dealers.......

Screen is PN 928.110.901.00

I woud advise to replace the top screen, as it does protect the wire, as Jim says.

Removing either screen changes the airflow over the MAF and changes the mapping of fuel/rpm/load. Porsche set up the car with that intake system.

The screen are there to try and make the airflow over the sensor more laminar.

Tim it is about $10 for a new one I do not have one on the shelf , good used is $ 5 or you could take the one off the bottom of the mass air and switch for the top . Sharktoberfest you can pick one up here . Just call me let me know what you want to do.
