Default Think I have a relay about to go sour... need help identifying which one

Hey,

Yesterday and this morning, when I went to start the car, a relay commenced to clicking. I insert the key, turn it to the position that engages the starter motor, and while the starter is turning I hear a 'clikclikclikclikclik' relay noise. It stops when the engine catches and I release the key. I -think- the clik is coming from inside the console, but I can't be sure-- it may be coming from the fuse/relay area.

Is there a commonly failing relay that this may be? If so, is it one that could leave me stranded? I'd just as soon pre-emptively replace it. Also, if it fails before the replacement arrives, is there something I can jumper so I can limp the car home?

OR, am I looking at trial and error to determine the culprit?

The car runs great, BTW. The only symptom so far is the clikclikclik.

Thanks in advance...

Hi Thaddeus!
SWAG, but I would check the Starter relay XIV first and see what happens.Maybe get the fuse panel open and get your head in there and listen while you crank it over.

That's not a silly guess at all... I believe my spare relay is the correct type also...

Thaddeus:
I believe there is a solenoid on the starter itself that can give these symptoms when it is near its endlife. Usu it stops when the starter engages. Hope all you have to do is swap a relay.

Yes, a 12 dollar relay would be a nice alternative to a 250 dollar starter...
