Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle.

I just went through the PET for all years for both USA and Euro. Guess what? The PET shows the y-connector and activated carbon canister for all. So, just exactly why does the WSM say that the system was for '87+ only?

Y-connector is 928 201 219 02

Otay,

A collasped gas tank does account for only 13 gallons on fill up, and possibly the mileage. But the shark as always done this for the last 1 1/2 I 've owned it.

Just recently the gas fumes have staggered thruout the garage. The shark now fires right up, almost to soon. For the past year it took about 2-3 seconds for it to turn over. I was wondering what mechanicism causes that and could it be related?

Where do I get another gas tank, cheap?
Can you uncollaspe a tank?

Check the big three for a tank or talk to the guys at 20th street about a used one (once you've determined it is the tank).

Fuel capacity on all models is 23 gal (approx 100L) as I recall. Since I have filled my tank with more than 20 gal on both cars, I'm pretty sure that's right. Also, you're idiot light should come on when you are down to about 5 gal (not the US standard of 1.5). My suspicion is that this goes hand in hand with the serious penalty for running out of gas on the Autobahn. With a 5 gal reserve, you got no excuses.

Re. the fuel tank, crawl underneath for a good look. The PLASTIC tank should nicely fill out to the retaining straps - just like a grid girl. If there are spaces, gaps, buckles - the tank is collapsed.
Roll the rugs back in the right rear hatch area: pop out the ~6" diameter plug - the big gland nut you are looking at holds in the fuel level sender, the wire harness, and the fuel return line. Look for signs of buckling (inward), and gas stains from around the 4" gland nut.
Another classic way to lose a lot of gas (milage), and risk immenent kaboom is from the 16v L-jetronic style fuel injectors. A leak developes in the body seal and gas escapes at a healthy rate; however, if you look closely at a running engine, you can watch the gas appear and almost instantly evaporate due to engine heat. Easy to smell, hard to see, and risky ...

Yup the gas tank on all 928's is supposed to be 22.7 gals.... My mileage tends to vary on the type of driving...in town with spirited driving about 13.5....a mix of city and highway, also spirited..about 16.5 Cruising the freeway between 80-100mph about 21....I bet it would get at least 25 if I could stand to drive 55 on the freeway...& my gauge never read totally full...always a touch under which is also normal....but when the tank gets down to the 1/4 tank mark (which is is really close to the red zone) the most I've ever put in it was 16 gallons....but I don't want to run it that close to empty...I guess its that big reserve again!

Red,

I had a similar situation with my 81; I left the gas cap half a turn loose to avoid collapsing the tank further before I found time for repairs.

A wise man once advised me that it was best not to let your tank drop below 1/4 full just in case you wished to run from someone.....FWIW.

As a general note to all: a mechanic I respect told me "electronic pumps don't like to be run low" he wagged his finger at me, he was trying to help me with longevity, etc.

It's relative in the 928. Most of the time a fuel pump is cooled by the fuel sloshing around and the longer it is allowed to be exposed to air, the hotter it gets. Then the wire expands, completes the circuit and the light comes on and you buy gas for $2.15 a gallon. As I understand it, the 928's fuel sender has a seperate thermistor on it (much like an aircraft fuel cell) which turns on the afformentioned "idiot light".

You're mechanic is absolutely correct.

I found 2 gas leaks on top of the engine. Its under the spider by the rear leg when a metal gas line meets some rubber hose. I was able to fix it by tightening a couple of turns. But something tells me I need to keep looking for more leaks.

Doh.

Ron our cars are so stinkin fast that you don't need much fuel to turn a tail into nothing but a bad memory.

I average over 21mpg in my '80, about 90% freeway driving with a decent amount of stop-and-go traffic. I usually fill up at anywhere from 17.5 to 19.5 gallons. The most I ever filled up was 20.5 gallons. I drive about 115 miles a day to and from work.

Worf -
For my 1980 the Y connector is in PET on Maingroup 2, Illustration 201-10 (-15 for later years). P/N 928-201-219-02, it's called "connecting piece". I have one on the 1980. It is shown for every US and ROW year from 1978 through 1995 i.e. all 928s.
