Possible Euro 83 purchase....Q&A
Need some advice....I have a line on an 83 euro 928 ( Auto ) for well under $5k....seems to be ( from pics) in good shape other than some faded paint on the roof and hood ( was originally a CA car ) and an apparently leaky sunroof ( I can tell by the duct tape)....when I go look at the car what should I be sure to check?
Also....for "well under $5k" is this car ( if in good shape ) a fair price?

was the odo reset to 0 during import?

Actually it's had a tremendous amount of recent service including the timing belt and Water pump...how can I tell ( other than asking) if the odo has been re-set?
I would likely get a ppi, but wanted to give it a once-over myself to see if I even want to spend the PPI money ( or walk away).
The current owner has offered the mechanic's number who did all the work on it as a ref.

Dont forget to check if the ball joints have been replaced. Make sure the timing belt is under the
5 year 50000 mi. plan. Mine was at 10000 mi. but it was performed 10 years ago.
See how much service has been done (documented of course), Tune ups, plugs, wires, Tranny
oil service etc. the dollars can start adding up quick! MOTOR MOUNTS. Just do your homework.
Good luck these cars are very fun to have but dont leave your wallet at home.

Compared to what you will be spending on this car once/if you own it the PPI will pale into insignificance $$ wise but will allow you to at least gauge the $$$ to be spent.
Surprises are what hurt the most, a PPI by a reputable 928 person "should" allow you to avoid most of them. If this is your 1st 928 you owe it to yourself.
But gambling is a hobby for lots or people, and some win.

Euro cars nearly always have had the speedo replaced from Kilometers to miles to comply with U S laws so are TMU . Many USA cars have had odometer gear failure which may not get fixed right away. In the end condition, care is now more important than the odometer reading for most of these cars.

Sharkbait , good point most people tend to stop spending money on their car when they begin to consider selling it (or the wife helps make those decisions ) and things do not get fixed. They avoid the repair shop because of the dreaded call backs ...... while we were doing the front brakes we noticed the axles are falling off , the oil pan leaks , the steering rack leaks , and there is a small crack in the gas tank and the front tires are worn on the inside plus the rear brakes are at about 40 %. There are always exceptions and a few 928s have been shown a lot of love typically by a long term owner which by definition means they do not pop up for sale very often. The cars which pass quickly through multiple owners rarely are in good shape . Some people do spend far more money than they ever thought possible , trying to fix a 928 .

OK .....Never Mind! Looked at it today on the way home from the office....way too rough for me...I have enough on my hands with my 944 to undertake that much work.

the owner wants "$3k firm" for the car....and it may be worth that...it's just more work that I need right now to make it presentable....the exterior of the car is pretty straight ( I did not go as far as a magnet check so I could not tell you if there's any previous body work)....there was a dent on the driver's side rear of the car...on the *** if you will....but it appeared minor enough to be a simple repair. The interior was very rough ....and had lots of wires hanging and an odd looking, non-factory button mounted on the side of the dash....I know from speaking to the owner today that he's done and had done alot of work on the car to make it run well...and it did start right up and sounded OK ( I will qualify that I have no idea what a 928 is supposed to sound like!)...he said that before moving he was focused on getting the car mechanically sorted before making it look nice..... the interior work needed just over-powered the fact that the body was nice....If it were my car I'd want to gut the interior and start fresh.
And I so....I never got as far as 4.5l or 4.7l.....
