Thumbs up Ordered my Ott X-pipe today!

You can just tell he's a nice fellow from his emails.

That should be fun... I have a strong suspicion my cats are at least partially blocked. Flat spots that move around in the RPM band, altered exhaust tone...

He also recommended a place to get hi-flow cats, which I will deploy in the near future... so nothing out of YOU, Nicole...

This is the kind of upgrade I like: a replacement that is cheaper than Porsche stock that offers a performance enhancement...

Stay tuned... he's shipping it next week...

Thaddeus

I installed mine last week with the high flow cats. SOUNDS GREAT lots of BWAAAAAAHHH. I also plan on replacing the rest of the exhaust with new 2.5" exhaust pipe and a pair of bullet mufflers.

Loui is a super nice guy - an expert in 928 performance as well as pyrotechnic engineering... Just kidding about the last part!

You're going to love the sound with the X-Pipe. And with the high flow cats you will feel good and keep the power up. I doubt you'll even feel a difference. The environment will.

Thaddeus, I ordered mine exactly 10 days ago. I needed some more BWWAAAAH volume since I don't listen to the stereo in it very much. I guess he gets these in as a batch order.......I'll have to ask him if mine is shipping out next week too! (?) We'll have to compare notes once they are installed since we both have 86's.

Hemochromatosis is fun! Treatment: phlebotomy, i.e. bleeding. Medical science sure has come a long way...

- on the subject of the x-pipe, after doing a search and visiting the site - I have not been able to find a picture of one, nor data on the material of construction (stainless, OEM grade carbon steel, or regular mild steel exhaust pipe). Can one of the happy owners provide any data, or a link?

Chucky Z,

Can't do an X-pipe on a 78 unless you graft in a later model battery box. The box on your 78 (and my 79) is big and won't allow a duel exhaust setup to be layed out between the battery and the transaxle. Driver side is ok, pass. side no go unless you route below the box, which gives you a nats *** worth of ground clearance. You may want to settle for a custom exhaust shop fabbing you a y-pipe with a silencer, muffler, etc. where the cat is. (I have this on the 79) Or, just a straight pipe. That way, you can bolt up the old cat setup someday to keep the originality of that 1300 mile kermit you have.

BTW, I saw your post on that crossmember that is right under the 2 pipes into the y. Not much room to manuver through there so I'd definately get it done by a good custom shop that can mandrel bend around it. The standard y-pipes I've seen are for later 2 valve cars without the crossmember. They hang down way to far to bolt it back up.

Good luck!

John,

Let's do compare notes when they come. 2 heads are better than one if we come across difficulty.

Mike,

The only thing I know about the product is what I've read on the board here. Don't know the weight or the material the pipe is made of. Search the forum for Xpipe, x-pipe, and Ott, and you should turn up something. The thing costs 350 USD including shipping. I don't know if Louis would charge more for shipping since you aren't in the US.

This will probably be the last "major" job I do before Sharky gets put away for the winter... I just want to drive that thing as much as possible, since I've only put 300 miles on it since May. That car has spent more time with its wheels off than on this summer...

I believe it is made of a mild steel which comes painted w/ a high temp paint. The hardest part of the install was removing the old cats. Depending on your set up, if you add high flow cats like I did, you need to cut off some of the last section of the x pipe to fit the new cats, Also be sure to remove the smog pump belt because if you leave it on, it makes an annoying noise since it's no longer connected to the new setup. Louie is very helpfull if you have any questions.

Hope this helps.

Doug
