Unhappy 93 928gts radio

my radio gave up, first memory and station selection, then came on
intermittently, now off.
i would like to keep it original if not too difficult. repair is probably
not a serious option. are new or used replacements available or
what would be a simple replacement?

appreciate recommendations. thanx

New blaupunkts have the same plug. At least mine did. Best to upgrade to a newer one.

KA

Talk to Roger Tyson. He posts as Rog100. He found an original brand new in the box cd player for his GTS on the cheap. Not sure if he bought more than 1 but you can contact him.

Good luck!

The 93 came with an Alpine unit - either a CR-1 (cassette unit with shuttle control) or the CD-2 (CD and radio no shuttle control). Try Porsche first they do a core replacement for $400 and you get the warranty. Look on eBay as you can find units there (if you have patience) out of other Porsches, they were standard fit across the range.
Scott G seems to have found someone to repair the units so that is worth a try. At the time I had a problem nobody including Alpine would touch it as there were no parts available.
I ended up upgrading to an Alpine 7807 unit which was an option on the 94/95 GTS. A much better unit than the 93 models. You can get this as a core exchange from Porsche. Needs a 94 connecting wire from the head unit to the amp (928 645 410 00).
If you want to go this route get back to me as I have a mass of info.

Roger,

I tried doing the Porsche replacement through 928 Specialists. Dave tried twice to get the right radio but both times Porsche sent a newer Alpine(?) unit. I guess the CD-2 is NLA. I wanted to keep a stock look so I had my unit repaired.

Kerdman,
Try the people that Scott found they look pretty good.
Call them on Tuesday to see what they say and keep us informed.

The CR-1 was not a good head unit. I wanted to stay as close to stock as possible. The 7807 is a great unit and I am very pleased with the upgrade.
New from Porsche its $1800 - go figure.
You can buy one on eBay for less than $200. You can do a core exchange with Porsche for $350. It will also allow you to put a CD shuttle in the trunk.
It has a detachable face and you can change the illumination to match the GTS instruments.
Send me a PM with your email address and I will send some more info to you along with a phot of the unit in my car.

FWIW, I put a used Becker CDR-220 in my GTS and I am very pleased with it. I bought it off Ebay. Looks like it belongs there. I bought a harness from SW Stereo.

Thumbs up

Kerdman,

It's your lucky day!

I have a factory Porsche CD-2 in-dash radio out of a '93 GTS. It works correctly and has the anti-theft Porsche code card. Would you be interested in this radio?

It sounds as though it's exactly the same unit you had already. Just plug it in, enter the code, and your back in business!

Do these (poorly taken, I might add), pictures, look familiar?

PM me or call me at 317-506-3022.
Todd Johnson

I just purchased a used CD2 (from an 89S4) and need the code. I do not have the card. Does anyone know if the codes are specific to each radio? or same code for the same model Radio? If anyone could provide me with the code, i would appreciate it. Otherwise i will have to visit the dreaded Porsche dealer several miles away. Thanks
Mauricio,
