Question Loose side view mirror!

Can anyone give me some pointers on how to tighten my pass side, rear view mirror. the connection point at/to the door is tight, It's the pivot point on the shaft that is a little floppy. How do you get to, what ever needs tightened?

Thanks,

SilverSFR

Default Loose side view mirror

Loose side mirrors are usually due to two possible missing parts:

1. The upper/lower plastic washers ( 911 731 347 00, 911 731 345 02) that are part of the bolt/spring assembly that hold the mirror base to the upper portion.

2. Most likely, however, is a missing teflon "seal" (944 731 143 00) that sits between the upper and lower assembly. It acts as a plastic bearing on which the upper assembly pivots. Its the very first piece that is lost when someone (PO, body shop?) disassembles the mirror assembly.

There should be absolutely no play in the mirrors.

Current project: change RH mirror base to allow full rear pivot capability

I looked at Big Dave's page and have an alternate suggestion: Bend the mirror forwards (carefully) and then tighten the Allen bolt the you'll see exposed in the lower mount.
