Default easiest way to replace cv-boot on driver's side?

I know if the boot you need to replace is on the differential side, you can just undo the allen bolts, but what if it is on the wheel side? Do I have to take the entire hub assembly apart?

The outer CV does not come apart you must remove the inner (differential side) boot and C V from the axleshaft and slide a new boot all the way down the axle to cover the outer CV. Most people remove the axle from the car by taking of the big axle nut in the center of the rear hub.

I just did this job on the inners since one of them was ripped. My suggestion is "WYIT" do them all. It is not much more work. If you have to take the inners off, as Jim pointed out to get to the outers, you may as well due it all. Make sure you pay attention to the direction of the inner CV hubs. (scored line toward the diff on the outside of the hub). Clean out the old black grease and hit it with 80 grams of fresh grease specifically for the joint. It is a messy job, but not tough. Check for wear on the ball bearings, the collar and the hub. You may see some signs of scoring by discoloration, but no pits or grooves. If you do, replace them. Make sure you clean and then repack real well. The workshop manual gives a good instruction on it. The pre 82 cars had the cap bolts on the outers, after that, they were welded. You should get new boots with new clamps for both and gaskets for the inner hubs. It's about 2 hours of work for all, providing you don't have to fight to get the hubs off the half shaft splines.

BTDT recently - lower exhaust to improve access. Undo the BIG axle nut by jacking against a bar, comes off smoothly, may need a few repositions of the car though (do this before lifting). re-tighten by hand only until you can get a big torque wrench on it.
If you drill a small hole in the boot clip after removal, you can re-use it - tighten with needle nose plier in the hole. Hold joint to boot at inner end with bolts or cable tie to stop it flopping and coming apart while trying to refit inner end to diff - BTDT!
