my engine won't hold idle. I pop the hood and notice this detached linkage....can anyone tell me how to reattach it?

steve,
that piece is just a bracket that holds a test port on the '87 cars. has nothing to do with how the car runs.
as i recall it attached to one of the hexbolts that hold the side panels of the inatke on.

Ditto what Tom says..... And the naked ball joint on the throttle linkage is for the "kick down" cable in auto cars.
Can you describe what yor car is doing when it souuld be idling? Is it dying or surging?

thanks for your interest and responses. This has been a week of questioning myself over keeping this car, apparently it has been a challenging week for VU and Big Dave as well. The frustration of having the car run poorly, of spending money to fix little things, the realization that just because I could work on my 70 Cuda in high school doesn't mean I can work on a 928........I have been ready to sell it and say "i'm done" as well.....
But the good news is that I have decided to go for it. I am fortunate that Dave L and Garrity, at Motorsport in SLC, found me last year. They are so knowledgable that I have decided to spend what it takes to do it right. As such, I have checked my folding wing 5-speed in for surgery. The tranny is being dropped and synchros replaced. The torque tube will be checked and rehabbed if necessary. Then the engine will be pulled; head gaskets, valves, vacuum leaks, powder coating, everything! (Garrity did the clutch last year). I will also repair some rot under the passenger rear window, I am shopping for 18" wheels and tires, and possibly I will make the leap into the stratospheric world of forced induction! Along with cleaning up the interior, I am hoping to have a near "New" 928 in my life. VU, best of luck to you and I hope you continue to share yourself with rennlist. Big Dave, I hope you don't regret your decision. Andy, thanks for your willingness to share info and I hope to continue learning from you and everyone else on Rennlist......

I don't have a photo, as far as I can tell it looks the same but with a good yank it flips straight up ; and you can see springs exposed. No difference functionally, but unique to only early 87 MY.
