Engine Stand
Search engine not working, so apologies if this has been discussed before.
Can a standard engine stand be used with our motor, if so, great - its a trip to the parts supply store. If not, why and what is needed?
Thanks

Use a stand rated at 2000# or up. The smaller stands typically found at parts stores are a bit unstable. I tried a 1000# stand first and the darn thing made me too nervous as I watched it flex while releasing the pressure on the hoist.
The biggest pain is rounding up the bolts to fasten the stand mount to the bellhousing flange.

Sure it can.
The 928 engine does pose some difficulties in that the bell housing bolts where you want to mount the stand are in the top and bottom halves of the engine. I did the block split/assemble on the ground without the pistons. With just the block and crank the "short short" block ins't too heavy for two guys to lift. Others have braced up the front of the block when split. One guy mentioned that he just let it hang by the two bolts. If you look in the manual you'll see that the Porsche engine mount is like a half-circle to support the block when split.
The 928 is also fairly heavy and, with the cam towers, fairly wide. This make it less stable on the stand. I suggest getting the "two ton" or biggest stand you can find.
One issue is getting the right bolts. IIRC, the bell housing take 122x1.5mm bolts which are an unusual size. Then you need long ones, too. Bolts from the front suspension work.
