Hi everybody,
I went to inspect that 1995 GTS once again today, but could not find the block number. Despite of the directions I was given by other people on the forum, I was unable to detect a block number. Now I must admit that there was a lot of grease, grime and dirt on the block and I had a tough time getting to those parts of block where the number could have been.
All I know is "it is stamped to the left of the oil fill neck (looking at the engine) above the water pump."
Can someone be more specific? Maybe a picture would help?
In any event, thanks in advance for the help.

Same on all 928 engine blocks. a raised flat surface on the front edge of the block adjacent to the rightside cylinder head. The radiator hose and smaller thermostat to fender well hose block the view. It is about 4-5 inches below the hoses and usually covered with muck .

In your case there should be M28/50 at first line and 81S 00xxx at second one. Don't be surprised if it doesn't look like first picture and looks like block was machined before number was stamped. This is normal it seems on later models. Don't know when this practise started but it was long before GTS. Think it was in use in S models already. Maybe earlier.

Thank you Tony. Because of your site, one day I might be able to put everything back together like they should.

As you can see from the pictures above, the stamp is right next to an oil well that fills and subsequently overflows once the oil filler neck gasket fails. This can cause problems in the cam belt area and should be rectified as a matter of urgency.
If the car you inspected had "a lot of grease, grime and dirt on the block" then be aware that this will need to be addressed.

Thanks for the detailed feedback and the pictures. They have been a great help. I guess a new inspection visit is due...
