Re-carpeting

Re-carpeting
anyone ever had to deal with this?? is it difficult to do in the 928 or would i benifet most out of taking it to a pro? Seems like it's something that's not too hard but again i could be wrong

It is very easy, depending upon how much disassembly you're willing to do and time you want to devote to it. Not necessarily needing a pro. IMO there isn't anything about the operation that you need to watch out for other than the normal careful disassembly and noting of fasteners.

well if i can get the interior looking nice again by getting the carpet taken care of i'd devote all the time i can to the project after all.. It is my project car, and i want to do most of the wrench work and restoration work myself and not worry about paying someone else to do it...
i did try tearing out the carpet before but i noticed a big thick heavy styrofoam sorta double sided stickey thing O_O (ya i know, akward description) and was wondering if it was a safe bet to pull this thing out... Because i might have some rusted through panels that need to be assessed before i begin recarpeting

I've also been thinking of re-carpeting soon. One question I have is how should the old carpet be removed from the interior panels (ie. door panels and center console panels)? Seems like it would be easy to destroy these panels if not careful.

It's my understanding that they cannot be removed from door panels, so I wouldn't bother there. Perhaps that area could be cleaned very well and dyed the same color and the carpet you are getting just to freshen it up. If you are thinking about pulling everything out, you may want to think about redying the leather to its original glory.

Done that, some pics here http://www.928s4.com/project/carpet.htm , I didn't replace the carpet on the door panels or seat backs. The replacement interiorI purchased parts were black and I liked them that way. However, I did get carpet pieces for them in the kit I ordered.
One bonus of replacing the carpet is the improved aroma ... at least in the cae of my car.

Everything can have the carpet removed. To do the door panels right the panels need to be removed. I made new console side-panels our od some pressboard as the original ones were busted up. Looks great, by the way.
Best to remove the front seats, front console, rear seats and rear console. Then you've got a clear shot at the whole interior.

Ive done it.
Expect some down time for sure. Its a tedious process and getting the carpet to fit they way you want it can take a while...all depends on what you want it to look like when its done.
in a nut shell...
all seats, front and rear out
both door panels
center consol
rear console
rear quarters
door sills
passenger and drivers ides trays..
plus other little odds and ends.
Screws...glue and fasteners that will break!!
get plenty of sharp x-acto blades!
I bascially gutted my car except for the headliner and dash.
When done though it was the best time spent on my car. I mean after all it is a car and the carpet has been in there for 17+ years! No matter what the quality to begin with, it has to go at some point. It got rid of that old smell in the car and really updated the inside..
I used a company called Gahh. I went to my local Porsche dealership and looked at the new cars one day and loved the "grahpite grey" color. I called GAHH, theny sent me a sample, i went to the dealership with it in hand...Perfect match. I went home and ordered it. I also got a leather sample to match and had my seats made in the same color along with some dye to do the side panels.
All worth it.

I used "Original Equipment Interiors" and they sucked. Stuff was late and took two tries to get the rear mat wrong. Had to have that re-cut locally.
I didn't remove the rear quarters, just loosened the fronts of those and tucked the carpet underneath. Door sills need to come out. Many cans of 3M adhesive were used. 6, IIRC.

Thanks BC, yeah, i love it as well. Since this is my daily driver i want the inside of the car clean and "tight" and the way I want it. Now i have it that way! Took some time, but im very happy. I shed 60lbs with the seats alone!

I just finished re-carpeting mine--all the carpet(including the door panels) was replaced. It wasn't very difficult, just time consuming. I used thermo shield for heat/noise reduction, just make sure to use good adhesive.
