seat types
Hi,
I'm chasing b/w checkered (pasha / op art) seats for my '81 stick euro.
It appeares that the early manual euro cars had in some cases 944 og 911 style seats.
I've found 1983 911 op art seats in perfect condition. But I need to figure out if this style seat was ever installed in the 928 from the factory before I pay $$$ for them.
My current seats seem to be the same style as the ones in the pictures, is this style seat really 928 original equippment? Am I safe to go with the checkered ones in pic2?
MM

The red ones don't look right. They seem to come out of a different Porsche. Why? Because the only 928 seats that somewhat resemble those are the optional sports seats (availalbe until 1984, I believe). But they don't have the right type of seating area, and I think the back rests are more sculpted on the sports seats also.
The checkerboard seats are wrong, too. They are in nice shape and might fit, but they are not the type that came in the 928.
Check here for to see what the "real thing" looks like: http://www.928registry.org/1978-928-0816.htm

Exactly correct. I will attach a photo of the 928 optional sport seat.

I see what you guys are getting at, but I suspect this only goes for US cars. I've seen many early stick euros with the simpler seats as the ones in the pictures in my original post.
I guess these ones would be my safest bet (round release button, and deep cushions)

to further mess up the picture, here is another style 928 seat, this is from a 100% original german car (1983). This sort of backs my theory of euro seats being different...

here are 911 and 944 op art seats, looks like my original posting shows 911 style seats.
The question remains, were 911 seats installed in the euro 5-speed 928 non-s from 1980 to 1983? I think so, because these cars vere given simpler interiors, to make them different from the 928S.
No cruise control, no rear sun visiors, no power seats, no power washer for the windshield. There may be other tings too. And 911 seats...

The second pic looks like the sport seats in my S4, but it's hard to tell with the square pattern inlays. Sport seats on anS4 adjust forward and back manually, not sure about operation on prior year sport seats.

Erkka,
I think I'm gonna fit the '83 911 checkered seats, and have faith in that my car is a 928 sport...
At least I'll stick to that story until proven wrong.
Avtually my current seats are the same design as the two pictures in my original posting, only sloppy refurbished.

Between 1977 and 1984 there were only two types of seats for the 928 - the ones with the round buttons (standard), and the sports seats as posted by Joe F. The only exception were special Recaro seats offered though what then was called the "Sonderwunschprogramm" - a special order program. None of the seats in this thread looks remotely like those Recaros.
The red seats shown in your initial post are NOT 928 seats. I'm not sure, if they are 911 or 94 seats, but I am 100% sure they are not from a 928. While most Porsche seats seem to be interchangible from a purely mechanical standpoint, they are different for each model.
I personally like the original standard seats with the Op-Art ("Pasha") fabric. They had the driver sit higher than the later seats, but height adjustments were able to compensate for most of the differences, except for really tall drivers.
If your goal is to restore the car to original, then I'd recommend holding out until you find a perfect pair of the correct seats, lose those black side moldings, and make sure your rear window trim is black, not polished aluminum.
There is and never ever was a "928 Sport" model, but you can always create your own. Just don't claim it is an original restauration, if you do...

Nicole,
Agree on seats, all other types I have seen have been on cars where seat originality isn't first priority. Very likely changed after originals wore out.
"928 Sport" model might have name given by some resourceful salesman for these stripped down last year 4.5's. Don't believe it's official factory name.
Black side moldings are interesting phenomenon. They seem to appear mainly on certain early eighties cars. Probably has nothing to do with factory anyway.
