Question What year 928 should I buy?

I would like to buy a 928 and restore it. Is there any year I should stay away from? Are there major flaws I should watch for? I have a 996, but want to restore something and drive it daily. I have always loved the 928. Thanks in advance for the advice.

There is a wealth of information available by searching this site. Lot's of info in the "New Visitor" post at the top. Buy a '78 5spd, '86.5 5spd, '87 auto or '95 GTS. If you can solve electrical and vacuum problems you can have a reliable daily driver from any year model. They are all great!

The phrase "restore a 928" sends shivers down my spine Although at this point they are just about all in need of some restoration. I certainly wouldn't advise buying a ratty 928 and trying to restore it, unless you are ready to sell the 996 and then some to pay for it. This was Porsches top of the line car when built and parts prices reflect it.

I think you are much better off to decide which model you like best, find a nice example and buy it. I assure you that even a nice example will give you plenty to restore over time. About the only thing I would avoid would be pre '85 manual trans cars because of the weak synchros. Favorites...86.5 five speed, '89 GT really no bias here, but all of the S4 cars are nice, any GTS is awesome, and really even the old ones are great cars. You just need to decide what level of power you would like and whether or not you choose to row your own.

Good Luck

Great feedback! The money is really not an issue. But, it sounds like the 3K to 5K cars on ebay are not what I should be looking at. Sounds like I should spend more and get an S4 that is in good shape already. Although, I would love to do exterior and interior work myself as long as the motor and trans were in good shape. Thanks again for the great advice.

If you are looking for the hot rod version of the 928, get an '89-91 GT. If you want the best Grand Touring car ever built, get an '87-91 S4 or if you can afford it, any GTS you can find.

Just my opinion.

If you like the earlier body style...the 86.5 OR an '84-85 EURO!

If you are looking for a car that handles and performs , but do not want all the hassle of the later models and seems to always sell at a reasonable price for a decent one. try the 83's or 84's preferable the later 83's after serial numbr 600 they should have most updates installed. It doesn't matter which one you buy the preference is realy in the Style you prefer, and the cost you want to pay. You can have 5 or 6 83's or 84's for what you will be pay fo rone of the later models.

all great replies...... if I had it to do over I would find an s4 with high miles and all the maintenance...steering rack, head gaskets, a/c, torque tube, etc. paid for by somebody else (like me!?!)..... although a GTS would always sit right.. and of course that '89 GT with black piping on the cashmere seats and 46,000 mint miles that i know about and then I really should have just picked up a sweet euro because they have so much juice and the spider for ZZZZZIIIIPPPPPO dinero......

We're very lucky that 928's are capable of very high mileages, and they don't rust. Therefore you can chose an early model without taking on serious restoration project. However as has been pointed out before whatever car you decide upon it will require a good deal of TLC as even the youngest is now ten years old, and most are approaching their twentieth birthday.
