Good morning,
Here is my finding on glue for the interior.

3M Super 90 in a spray can: This stuff is ok at best for doing carpet on the floor. I cant really find any other use for it. It doens hold up in the heat.

DAP Contact Cement: This is the stuff you can buy at Home Depot of the local hardware store. They say for Foam, Cloth, Leather and a lot of other materials. This stuff is crap. After six month It still didnt hold. I did almost an entire interior in this and it fell off in the sun. :banghead: :grr:

Dap " HHR Solvent Type Spray Grade Contact Cement. This is for bonding Landau tops constructed of non-penetrable fabric. So far this stuff rocks. It dries quick so you must work fast. Yu can put it on with a paint brush or shoot it thru a gun. I have been using a paint brush because my air compressor is on the fritz. This is what I have done with it so far.

Dash, A Pillers, Front Console, Rear Console, Headliner, Arm Rest, Door Panles, Glove Box All Rear Hatch Trim. NExt will be re-foamong the rear quarter panles and then re-covering them.

You cant buy this glue in the hardware store. I had to go to a shop that sells tools and materials to auto interior shops. They say it is for proffesional use only. I told them I work on my car so much its like a second job. :roflmao:

I hope this helps.

It's very simple, it's just like doing bodywork on a car. It's easier actually.

1. Sand down the entire dash real good.
2. Use fiberglass reinforced bondo on the entire thing.
3. Sand it down real smooth, make sure you keep the dash contours(don't go crazy here).
4. After it's sanded down perfectly, time to texture. Here is the easiest part of all. SEM's texture spray is amazing. You only need a little and anyone can get a perfect finish.
5. Color match to your car.

The texure is like a pebble finish that looks better than the factory grain. It just has a newer feel to it.

Here are some pictures. Yes, I removed the factory holes(defrost vents). Pictures don't do it justice! :p

I don't see any pics in the post. Apparently, everyone else does. :crying:

Hammer it's an old thread and the pictures have been removed. The pictures were good. The results seem good. Even if it last only 3 to 5 years it would be worth it but I don't believe he has had any problems with cracking since he did it.

Can you get the DAP part number for this product? I can't find it based on the name above. HHR doesn't show up anywhere. Thanks.

Tres 05-15-2005 02:51 PM

Bill,
There is only one number I see on it and it is 40552. The barcode for it is 0 7079800233 3 The lable is white with a black band on the top and light band on the side with light blue and black text. It has a pictur of a Van and a car as well as a spray gun. It does say for Industrial and professional use only, so I dont think it is intended for consumer use. The one I have came in a 1 gallon container. Let me know if you can not find it, the supplier here is J.F. Hagen in San Antonio, Texas.

You do know that if the word "Marine" appears in a product's description, it's going to cost 3 times as the non-marine version. :roflmao:

FlyingDog 05-16-2005 06:04 PM

...and be 3 times as strong. I've used MarineTex in situations that would turn Bondo or Bondo's fiberglass resin into dust... literally. I just don't know if it'd be flexible enough or or easily spreadable. I was pouring it.

Dash solutions

How is the fix when the car heats up?

Anything (other than leather) we've put on the dash tends to really smell up the car for the first few months when it hits the sun.

That is why we went with a fitted leather solution - top end material & fast installation without the need to pull the dash.

Regarding Tom Carson's source (Message 43 above) http://www.autoupholsterykits.com/dashpad.html

They are no longer an agent of this Australian company: http://www.dashrestorations.com/about.shtml

This is what they told me about pod restoration:
"Thank you for contacting Dashboard Restorations where we have specialised

in professional and genuine dashboard pad restorations for almost 20 years.

Our expert craftsmen use only the very finest materials and UV protected OEM vinyl, and vacuum forming technology.

The cost to completely restore your unit is AUD$222 plus AUD$25 export packing – ex factory Brisbane, Australia.

Please add AUD$23.00 should you require a color other than black – this charge covers a professional colour matching service to ensure your dash is absolutely identical to the color sample you need to provide us.

Whilst many original vinyl grain/texture are no longer manufactured our finishes are almost identical.

Current turnaround is about 21 working days, and airfreight is around 3 days to most parts of the world. Sea Freight is around 28 days.

Please contact a local freight agent to arrange shipping – we will return the unit on a “freight collect” basis via the same nominated freight service.

Please address your unit to –

Dashboard Restorations,

6/4 Lancashire Street,

Acacia Ridge, Queensland 4110,

Australia

Also ensure to mark the parcel -

“Entering Australia under TRADEX Order 2003-355, Instrument 346879”

-this notation avoids any duty or taxes when your unit enters and leaves

Australia under an agreement we have with the Australian Trade Department.

Our services also include the very latest technology for resurfacing of automotive woodwork and all other interior and exterior parts (up to 10’xi4’), in a host of surfaces including wood grains, carbon fibres and brushed metals.

Our web site www.dashboardrestorations.com.au outlines these services in more detail."

USPS 4 day air service will be arround $60. With US$ 184 price, plus $120 shipping, it is still $100 less than Just Dashes. I may try them.

I did use Dashboard Restorations to redo an early dash a few months ago. I asked them to fill in the center speaker when they did it. the dash came back looking like new (I'll reinstall it during the summer). the total cost was about $495 but this is all new material, not a 'new old stock' dash that is actually 20 years old and that often goes for well over $500. I'm quite sure this dash will go many years without developing cracks. nice people, great communications and the workmanship is excellent. btw...the work was all done locally in Washington state

Thanks Tom,
I will check them out (http://www.dashboardrestorations.com/index.htm) as well about their pricing. It is good to know that You have had such a good result with them.
