Default Mass Flow Sensor?????

I heard a rumor that the Bosch 928 Mass Flow sensor is the same as the BMW M5 2000 Bosch Mass Flow Sensor.

Can anyone confirm this? A brand new BMW mass flow sensor from the dealership is $290.

Matt,

Not sure, but all things are possible. The quick check would be to look for the Bosch p/n on the item and cross-reference between the two.

Theoretically, if the p/n matches then they are the same. The only real differences between one Bosch MAF and another are: wiring, flow curve (the most important part), and size/shape.

FWIW, I would think that the BMW would be a "hot film" instead of "hot wire" unit, but I am not well versed in current BMW doodads, I guess it could be hotwire.

Still, John Speake could address this more thoroughly .

Hi Matt/ Greg,
My info is that the M5 from 1988-1992 used the same MAF as the 928. It was also used in a homologation special Audi Quattro in '84 '85 (only 200 made).

As Greg says, I would have thought that by 2000 BMW would have moved to hot film.

Is the guy still selling MAFs cheap on EBay ?

Matt- I'm pretty sure that when that guy on e-bay was selling MAF's he was marketing to both 928's and BMW's. if you find out for sure, let us know.

The following are datd from the Bosch Catalog On line http://www.bosch-automotive.com/ecat-online/:

I am sorry, but I am sure why two Bosch P/N are listed for Porsche 928, 1990 GT, but here they are:

This 0 280 214 001 Airflow Sensor, is used as:
BMW 13 62 1 311 950
BMW 13 62 1 715 888
PORSCHE 928 606 141
VOLKSWAGEN 035 133 471 AC

This 0 986 280 124 Airflow Sensor :
BMW 13 62 1 311 950
BMW 13 62 1 715 888
PORSCHE 928 606 141
PORSCHE 928 606 141 00
VOLKSWAGEN 035 133 471 AC

So it looks like we might have some choises.

Hmmm, I've just checked my stock of 12 MAFs from 928s, and they are all marked 0 280 214 001

Even if there is another number, I don't believe there is any difference between them functionally.

You will see that for the 0 986 280 124 Airflow Sensor the Porsche number 141 is incremented to 141 00, this probably is shown on PET as "number replaced by.....". It probably just reflects some change of the Bosch number due to a small change in internal construction, the functionality remains the same.

So which BMW models/years do these numbers apply to ?

Good question John. As I recall the catalog does not specify that. I belive there are BMW parts suppliers on the net which allow to check the part applicability once P/N is entered. I belive Vertexauto.com is like that.

You could always have a custom unit made at Pro-M and have it calibrated to your needs. They use Hitachi electronics and have a way to get into the meter and set a calibration curve to it.

The Bosch catalog does have a vehicle link. For both numbers they are exactly the same, as John Speake expected. The prices aren't though,

I just posted this to the FREE STUFF thread....felt it was appropriate to put it here, too!

Free "LOANER" MAF

You could be next - this MAF has been used now on 4 different 928's to see if their MAF's were good or bad. Works fine.
NOT a giveaway - but a free "LOANER" to use for diagnostics or while waiting for a new one that might be backordered or something.

Nice one, Mark..........a great offer !

I can supply a rebuilt unit from my US agent on a 2 day basis, not a long wait for anyone who finds their MAF is wanting.

I can also supply on a "sale or return basis" to assist fault finding.

Piet, I can undercut that Euro lower price - 385 Euro, exchange

US price is 350USD, exchange

Those of you with access to BOSCH MAF specs and info, I need a cross reference for a MAF sensor with a part number 280 212 018 (non Porsche).....Which vehicles(s) is listed for?? ....I heard it's prpbably for Saab or Volvo but not sure...

Can anyone cross check this BOSCH MAF number???

Also another question: what's the best place to have a MAF unit checked/repaired??

Thanks _ VK

John,

Will be using your services very soon because it seems I have a MAF failure somehow. Different kinds of idle, sometimes rough, sometimes surging, sometimes bloody perfect. Also an issue at higher constant speeds, engine hesitates and seems to go into limp home mode, after a few minutes it usually picks up again.
