For the '87, I bought a pre-cut hood pad from 928Intl. for $65. It has a small egg-crate pattern of dimples which is similar to the original "waffle" pattern. For the '78, I bought a sheet of black "Armaflex" foam padding from Zims for $36. It is smooth which will make it easier to wipe clean. Both look very nice and really improve the look of the engine compartment. The purpose of the hood pad is sound insulation, not heat insulation.
