Default Parts car, what's it worth ?

Hi there,

Anyone ever do the calculus on what a 91 S4 is worth in parts? Thinking of buying one as parts car for my 87 S4, or vice versa. Design 90 wheels, no dents, paint is scratched here and there, and, oh yes, the leather trim on the steering wheel is missing. Engine runs nicely, all connnections on engine, hoses, electric cables are in excellent condition. No history whatsoever though(price is € 7500).

I've also been looking at a GT from 1990. Also no history at all, except one invoice for a stereo that was installed; two huge ugly bassboxes under the hatch. AZEV alloy wheels. Awful paintjob. Engine and vin do seem to confirm it's a GT. No decals or anything stating it's a GT but I understand that's not strange. It did have a very short shifter (I've seen quite a few manual S4s being sold as Gt's and they usually have a longer shifter) And as an added bonus a nice sticker of an eagle or something on the rear window Former owner was a night club bouncer.. Dealer wanted € 5000 + my nice, original and well maintained 87 S4. Would be a nice and gratifying project to bring this one back to it's former glory though; original wheels, take out aftermarket stereo, repaint etc.

What would your gut tell you ? I don't usually shy away from cars with no history, there are a lot of sloppy car owners that don't know these cars and don't think about it.

Thoughts appreciated,

Piet

Piet,

You can kinda price check on the used market for various bits etc. Check ebay and see what items are going for. An S4 engine in the US with no records but runs decent should fetch around $3-3.5K. I've seen design 90 wheels go for as little as $250 for a set up to $800 US.

What model AZEV wheels are on the GT? I have been looking at getting some "B" model Azev wheels for my car.

Good luch on your search.

Hi Geoff,

Type af the AZEV alloys is "A" . Starlike shape. De gustibus non est disputandum, or whatever the Romans said about it, but I don't think they do much for the value of the car.

Been hunting quite actively lately, flew to Munich a few days ago to look at a '95 GTS with a cracked engineblock that was for sale in a nearby village, bit of a strange guy, this dealer, his heavy Bavarian dialect wasn't helping communications very much It's kinda fun, chasing around for cars.

More seriously, I get the distinct impression that prices of these cars are fluctuating pretty much lately. Some dealers get stuck with them and can't sell at very low prices while private owners of, especially, S4's want unrealistically high prices. Suppose they're slowly moving into the realm of collectable cars. At this stage that might mean a lot of perfectly good but not super cared for cars are heading for a short life as streetbangers and then to the scapyard. Especially with all the advice on forums like these to be extremely carefull when buying one.

Hehe,

Piet

Piet,

I think you are correct. Easy to get into say an S4 and then become overwhelmed by maintenance costs. Have seen to many in a state of neglect.

I too love to search for these great cars. Have a blast.
