Flex Plate Position - a year later ...
I applied Earl's( et al) Loctite 290 treatment to my flex plate 12 months and 12KKms ( ~ 7200 miles) ago. At that time, the car had only 50KKm total, and the plate released 3.15 mm. When checked today, it was absolutely unmoved from that released, unstressed position of a year ago!
, measured to 0.01mm! Also, the face of the flex plate was confirmed flat via straight edge - in case something had moved on the rear coupler, shaft decided to grow, etc. .With the lurking issues of TBF, at least one camper is satisfied: when checking yours, I hope you find the same. You auto trans folks have checked??
While not an S4, I have been a bit paranoid about this topic since hearing about it post by torque tube R&R two years ago. At that time, Captain Earl's locktite fix was "brand new" so I opted just to check for flexplate preload and tighen the pinch bolt to 100% torque spec.
Well, I had mine checked about a month ago...long over due. Results were no apparent flexpate preload from the TT...essentially a flat flexplate when checked with a straightedge).
Additionally, I had the crank end-play checked at the same time. Results were well within spec...something like 6/1000ths, IIRC. Mileage was about 95,000 miles at the time.
