Question Silly Question, What is it?

I know this is a silly question but what is it and what for?

On my 85 S2 Auto there is a black socket with a grey lead mounted on the UK passengers side fuel rail, going to a sensor that mounts on top of the bell housing. My guess is that it is a timing mark sensor used for diagnostics etc. Just curious!!! Trying to find and learn what every little bit on my shark is and does.

TIA.

Thanks Jim,

Is it used only for diagnostics?

Yep its a quest I am finding that I am enjoying more and more as I get to know these cars better. But also to be fair I am consentrating on only one and am lucky enough to have lots of time to dedicate to it and I get the feeling I will need lots and lots more.
