Default Gears In Manual Trans.

I was replacing the sycros because I was experiencing a grinding when shifting from 3rd to 4th and worse when going from 5th to 4th. While taking it apart I noticed 4th gear had a small gap in one portion of the gear ( slightly off kilter). With a tap of the hammer the two pieces alined together. There are no chips or cracks on the gear itself. Is the gear still usable? Is it normal for the gears to come apart into two pieces or are they fitted tighter and 4th gear needs to be replaced?

Howdy. And welcome, if I may say so.
First post, and it's a doozy.
It's hard to say, without a picture. For me, at least. Maybe someone else has a better idea what you mean. If you can, get a photo uploaded.
We'll get an answer for you, one way or another.

J,

What year is the car?
(read the new user post if you haven't - lots of good stuff in there but not about syncros :-)
