Thumbs up Swamped by Gawkers at car club meeting!

Hi. In the last couple of years the Large Petro-Can Gas station has been holding a "Show your car off" every Thursday evening. Tonight before packing it in I went for a cruise and drove through and around about 100 cars. There was everything from a 1928 model A to Vettes. I thought the car was on fire the way the people turned around and stopped talking to each other. A couple of guys waved me over to park ,right next to a Prowler. O.K!- First of all some had no idea it was a Porsche .Some more people began to gather . I overheard "not many of those left!" They asked me if it had a 4 banger. Some idiot thought it was a Maserati ? Some thought it was some european version of the 944. One person even asked me is it Porsches' newest model. Like I said I was parked next to a Prowler. Cool car and as someone has said on the forum before "there was awe but no envy". 5 to 1 ratio my car against the Prowler in Gawkers .He just got there as well. His car was fresh to everyones eyes as well. I never realised the car was such an eyeball stopper. Altogether in the 20 minutes I was there I guess everyone who was there took a look at it! The car wasn't even that clean. It looks a lot sharper detailed. Next week I'm going down with a for sale sign, just maybe I might get a hell of an offer! Mike.

Yah - get $30k and buy a newer one for $20k... One thing is for sure - once you got shark bit, you can't be without one for very long!

Similar experience last summer in Key Largo. The local Arby's has a car night once a month. We were down that weekend and my son begged me to go down with him in the 928. I watched from a distance how people gathered around the car and gawked at it from all angles, inside and out. I had left the 'eyes' up and a boy asked me what it looked like with them down. I obliged and that created a new stir. It was alot of fun.

I have had two people stop me to ask me about the 'new' Porsche model. When I told them the year, they almost fell over.

With such great admiration from outsiders, I'm even more confused why the sales of this car were somewhat dismal as compared to the 911. ??? Mike.

Well it cost a bunch more to begin with.....a well appointed one, say half again as much, which was more than the premium paid for the turbo.............Plus the 911 had 30 or so years of loyal customers.......

Mike . . . It's a good feeling when your car draws attention like that. Sounds like you have a VERY nice Shark. It couldn't have been that dirty if it still drew a crowd. . WTG . . BTW, like Nicole said, once your bit . . your bit for life.

Thanks for the replies. Gretch, what about in the last 10 years when prices sunk to an"affordable level". With the attraction of these cars you would think that prices of these vehicles would skyrocket. There just has to be something about the 928s' design that makes people want for it. But on the opposite end of the spectrum perhaps they are turned off on such a timeless futuristic design being so old. Mike.

Mike, they are afraid of the cost of ownership...........this is a complicated chunk of machinery. She gets cranky and she will suck your wallet dry........Anyone with a room temp IQ looks under the hood and they can easily come to that conclusion..............

Lord knows I would have second thoughts about purchasing one had I known the quirks of these cars. I probably still would have done it because I wanted to learn about these cars. Just that I learned the hard way.

928s are quirky cars, but they really are awesome. Sometimes I just enjoy looking at my parked car, thinking you lucky bas___d you. And to think I did not spent the farm on it. To me the 928 is an 80's icon, and yet, today it still impressess a lot of people. My secretary said she liked the curves and sportiness of it, and thought originally that I had spent my 457K (retirement fund) on it. More than just a car, the 928 is like art to me. Fast art.

I am really glad that there are a lot of fanatics out there. Looking forward to seeing you at Devek Days.
