Autobox noise 91 S4

I have a 91 S4 and when i move it into drive or reverse i get a buzzing noise that i think goes away at higher speed. It is there in park also and gets louder when the revs are increased up to a certain level and then the engine noise makes it hard to say if it is still there. After using the car for a while the noise goes away. All the fluid levels have been checked and are A1... Any ideas.

is it a buzzing or more like a 'whiirrrrr' noise? My car made that noise when I was in dire need of a torque tube....not a good thing.

probably more like a whirring noise. But why should it go away after the car has been running for some time? Any ideas how i can confirm whether it is the tt or not. Is it a bearing on the tt that goes and is there a rebuild kit available.. Thanks for the input..........Jim

Always hard to call the shot on things like bearing noises - if that is what it is.
One quick test for the torque tube in an auto (which has 2 support bearings) is to get the car rolling down a slight decent, preferably with a smooth surface to diminish tire noise: Once you are cruising at the point where the noise occurs, shift into neutral and shut down the engine, and maintain the speed. As the whole torque tube innards are firmly bolted to the flywheel - the noise should disappear if it is the TT bearings only. There are 2 bearings in the convertor as well, but the front one turns with the TT IIRC (not sure, have to check).
The more classic, and perhaps better way, is to secure the rear off the ground - and stethoscope the issue with engine running in drive.
As to the bearings - possibly the Big Three, but I do know Paul Jaeger (Jagereng.com) sells a rebuild kit for ~ $60.
