I'm thinking about purchasing a 89 Porsche 928 S4 automatic. The car was owned by a older gentelman for the past 7 years and he said all service was up to date. Timing belt and waterpump were replaced at 121k the car now has 130k on it. He said the car is rated as in "good condition" by kelly blue book standards and only has minor wear on the outside and inside. Paint is still glossy and interior is very clean and all power options work. Car has always been garaged ever since he has owned it. The car also has a clean carfax that verifies he is the second owner. How much do you think a car like this is worth? He has service records back to 1997 as well. I noticed that the 928 market has really come down in price since a few years ago. I see 928 S4's selling in the 8k range all the time, is the market bad for these cars now?

$8K? Sure! Beaten, used-up ones sell for even less. This one sounds nice and with recent service and good records is worth more. Sight unseen: $10K-$13K

I concur with the ~$15k estimate, assuming the PPI was favorable, I would think anything under this would be good. Perfect dashes/pods are pretty rare, I'd bet. If the AC/Climate control system and vacuum pods work, that's another plus, along with heated seats still working. You'd want to have the thrust bearing inspected and the flex plate issue addressed. Just thinking about roads I've been down that weren't necessarily on the top of my list but have the potential to eat up a lot of time and/or money. Avoiding common pitfalls has to be worth something, although it's probably better characterized as "deferring" rather than avoiding them in perprtuity.

I just bought my '87 S4 on ebay a month ago for $7300. Car is a 9.5 out of 10. 101K miles when I got it with documented service for the last several years. Everything works. Just a reference point.

89 S4 with 130k and records, I doubt you could get 15k. Good condition with records in the Midwest that car is a 10k top. Although thats not taking color and any rare options into account.

Dan,
I can only speak for my own experience but I looked for an S4 or newer for more than a year. I finally ended up with my GT last year (May). My experience was that you could find pristine S4's for 13k with 80,000 miles (automatics). 5 speeds held higher values up to around $17k. Of course the car you are looking at has higher mileage, I'd guess it in the $8 to 10k range (max). Those on this list, myself included, would like to see the prices stabilize or go up but the reality is the opposite. The truth is that as awesome as the 928 is, there's lots of choices out there (and we won't even go into the expense to keep it on the road).

I just bought a 1988 S4 with 78k miles and all service records for $13,500 but it needed a spot of AC work. I expect I'll have $14,000 in it when it is all said and done. It is very nice but it does have a couple of dash cracks. Not ALL original paint (couple of panels have been painted) but it has never been hit or damaged. I am in Arkansas. Just another point of reference.

The car has all original paint and was owned by a 72 year old person for the past 7 years. THanks for the responses on what you guys paid for the cars, its really helping me determine the market because its scattered all over the place. Are people really paying as high as 10k for a clean S4 with 130k with records?
PS: What is a vacume pod?
