Default Windshield adhesive

As I understand it the 2 options are urethane (caulk) and butyl tape. I think the Porsche part is butyl and running about $180. 3M Window-weld, also butyl, is around $40. Urethane about $160.

Very soon it will be time to put the windshield back in my newly painted ’85 and the body guy needs to know which adhesive I’d prefer. He typically uses urethane but has used butyl in the past, and doesn’t really care.

Any reason not to use 3M butyl?

Thanks.

Windshield installation professionals will know best, I'd make a few calls and go with the highest percentage.

Call the professionals from an automotive glass company. That’s what most body shops do unless they have an in house specialist. Don’t worry about a Porsche part number being original. Who’s going to check? Modern sealers are the way to go.

Just have the glass company bond it with the 3M adhesive. It won't leak and will last as long as your windshield does.

It's what the glass shop I use used on my 928s over the years and it works great. They've been contracted with the local Porsche dealer since 928s were still new so they know what they are doing.

My GUESS is that auto glass companies are using urethane almost exclusively. No auto glass companies around here to ask, and those not so near here would never see a 928 (which may not matter?). I doubt that urethane vs butyl makes much of a difference but what do I know?

Just trying to see if I can save a few bucks from the thousands going into the respray.

Range Rover: The BMW stuff is interesting. Can’t tell if it’s butyl, urethane or something else entirely.

Thanks.
