Well, just hit my second deer in a 928 about an hour ago...2 lane country road in eastern Pennsylvania about a mile from home, not even playing around, just slowly cruising home and the SOB jumps out. A buck and he looked very big coming at the windshield...didn't get a chance to count the points. Fortunately I had the lights up...I think that threw him up a bit so the only damage I can see is a broken bracket for the headlight mount (on the way from 928 Intl..thanks Jim), broken windshield (lower right only), and some "crazing/cracking" of the paint on the nose and a broken slat on the lower portion of the nose. Pretty lucky as he could have easily done a LOT more damage. This car is an '88 5spd. On the way by he left a good size pile of dung on my hood so at least we both had the sh*t scared out of us ![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
My last encounter was w a small mountain "rat" on the Blue Ridge Parkway that hit the driver front and went under the car...much smaller deer but caused quite a bit more damage. That was in my '82 5 spd about 4 yrs ago at the Fall Mountain Drive w Chris and 928 Specialists.
When I called my insurance agent he asked me if I had a special license for hunting deer w a car.
So the question is: am I 3 or 4 deer away from being an "Ace" ..do you have to kill 5 deer with one car?

Ok I found the clip. Warning lots of cursing. It's on this page under 911 call. I had to right click and save it to my desk top.

Glad to hear you are okay, that's most important. Living in a highly Deer populated area puts you at a little higher risk. More Deer are killed every year by automobiles than by hunters.

Jim:
Glad you're ok. I had the same thing happen to me in May. No windshield damage though. Were your headlights pointing up a bit after Bambi impacted them? I replaced one headlight and one driving/foglight due to the impact. Took me two weekends to get the headlights to come all the way up on the stops and to retract to the proper level. Where the headlight arm comes through the side bulkheads had been knocked out of alignment by the deer impact, so getting thing back to the proper adjustment took a lot of trial and error. I was surprised that none of the cast aluminum pieces had been broken from the impact.
I drive a lot slower when I am on back roads at night. A month ago, I did come across a deer in the right lane of Interstate 64, west of Richmond. I too was in the right lane doing 80mph and saw him (or her) and swerved to the left. The deer looked like he was not sure which way to go next. I was really glad he hadn't decided by the time I passed him.
Good luck with the repairs.

In Idaho we're scared of deer and terrified of hitting elk. Less common, but worse, are free-ranging cows and horses. I've had two friends killed that way. Cars were totaled too.
Sorry, Jim. Glad you're OK.

Jim,
My poor car, eh, oh, thats right, it's NOTERLS car. Glad you are OK. Car dosen't sound too bad.
Teri just hit one with the wagon. Not too bad. She was almost stopped and was going behind the deer when he turned around and hit her. Two weeks later a tree limb fell through the back window.
I am on a first name basis with the adjuster.

I know Earl, if you'd known I was going to beat the car up like this you'd have kept it ![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
The insurance adjuster was amazed there wasn't more damage. The pot metal yoke that holds the H4 light assembly broke and the light base won't quite come all the way up...must be an adjustment (I hope)...is it tough to adjust this? The good news is that the shop can get the Porsche windshield in 4 days (needs to be Porsche because of the built in antenna...Jim B says the aftermarket stuff doesn't have it). So I still have a chance to get the car done in time for my annual pilgramage to Wisconsin...hoping to see Tim Murphy's car in Green Bay.
Even w the minimal damage done, the estimate w a new nose is $4500...up for grabs if the insurance will go for it since the lower slats may be repairable. New nose is $1400 by itself.
If anybody has hints on how to get the headlight assembly to go up a bit further and lock, I'd appreciate any info...checked Greg's site but not the shop manuals yet. I could wait for the shop to do it but may want to be driving at night before it goes in.
thanks all...it truly is minor and could have been much worse, trivial when compared to losing a friend.

Happened to me on the way through Neb. on the way home from Boston to CA bringing my new shark home.
I had been driving since Astabula, OH and was getting kinda punchy. I stop at the Harrahs in Council Bluffs IA to get a steak, stretch my legs and burn through a C note at the tables.
Feeling better after stopping I decide to try and make North Platte Neb. before calling it a day. go to pass an eighteen wheeler at around 85ish when a deer is suddenly right in my path after being pummeled by the Kenworth. Lucky for me it was laying on its side when I hit it. I swear the left side of the car was airborn as the left side wheels center punched the poor thing. I'll have to post a pick from home tomorrow of the deer guts all over the side of the car after I washed it as best I could at a truck stop.
It looked like that bit on Jackass where Johnny Knoxville rubs liver allover a car and has pieces of meet hanging from the front and then goes to a gas station to wash off the evidence. Pretty funny.
In any event, I got away with some missing paint on the nose of the car and a cracked fog light lense. These cars are tough!!

Jim:
I had the same problem with my headlights. When bambi hit the headlight, it not only broke the pot metal base, but probably also move the adjusting bolts that hold the arm bushing at the inner fender bulkhead.
On the passenger side, there are two 10mm hex bolts that hold the bushing and light bar to the inner fender. You will need a long socket extension, a knuckle adapter and the 10mm socket, and about 3 other arms. Probably a good idea to have a long magnet to get the socket when it falls down by the radiator bottom also.
The bushing is on the inside of the fender (headlight side) and the bolts (with washers) are on the engine side of the fender. The forward bolt does not go into a bolt hole per se, but fits into a slot, which fixes the forward position of the bushing and the light bar. The rearward bolt us used to position the height of the lowered light so it is flush with the fender top. This is the hard part to get right, as you want the lowered light to be at the correct flush position, but also need to make sure the headlight bucket rises to the full forward position. The nuts for the bolts are on the headlight side and are actually two nuts welded to a curved metal piece instead of two individual nuts.
I had a bear of a time getting my passenger side light to rise to the full upright position. It took a bunch of adjusting. By the way, also loosen the two 10mm locknuts that hold the light bar to the raising bar. These may have also been knocked out of whack. With a helper, the job goes much easier as you will need about 4 arms.
If you ordered a new headlight and pot metal arm, you might call Jim B. and order new plastic bushings also, which may have been damaged in the deer impact. To replace the pot metal carrier to the arm, you will need to drive out the steel pins that hold the pot metal carrier to the arm, pull off the broken piece (and bushing if you are replacing that also) and put it all back together with the pins holding everything in place.
Hope this helps. PM me if you need any other help with this.

WDS928,
Thanks for the detailed description. I'll have to print it out and see if I can identify the components. I'll also print out your description for the shop that'll be doing the repairs.
The problem is that the 'hook' on the headlight base is not traveling far enough up the roller to engage the 'hook'. See the picture below.
![](http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/light_1.jpg)
It looks like the base IS hitting a stop, (facing the front of the car, you can see it on the right in the pic below, a flat rubber coated "L" that is attached to the engine side of the fender well.)
![](http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/light_2.jpg)
Does this change anything. It looks like roller has to be lower to engage the hook since the base of the light can't go up any further due to the stop.
thanks again,
Jim

Here is a picture rolling into North Platte the day after i'm slammed into the deer. Look at the bloodstained highway. Going through Neb. and Wy. I counted 27 such blood spots. Thining out the herds I guess. Kinda scary when you realize how prevalent they are out on the roads. Made me slow down my night pace a bit.
