Hello,

I have an 80 Euro that was an open diff and i am trying to convert to a closed differential.

I brought the open and the closed diff down to the trans shop to pull the bearing and had them swap ring gears which they did and I installed the diff and i have lots of backlash.

I removed the spacers completely from one side and not much difference in the backlash. I then measured the thickness of the ring gears and compared them more closely and they are a world apart thickness wise but same number of teeth. (33)

So can anyone provide some wisdom on this change. It certainly appears that the ring gears will not interchange between an open and a closed diff and that the closed diff ring gear should have remained on the diff and i would have to live with the seating of the different ring and pinion gears.

So before I rip this thing out again and have the bearing pulled off again to put the original ring gear back on I would appreciate some been there done that history.
