Default Stuttgart and the prancing horse

In reply to postings elswhere on the board regarding a connection between the prancing horses of Ferrari and Porsche.

The name Stuttgart crudely translates to'stud-garden' in English. It was a famous horse-rearing town from way back and probably used the horse emblem for decades if not centuries before it was officially adopted in the 1930s. Nicole will probably know more about this.

Enzo Ferrari claimed to have been invited to use the prancing horse emblem by Countess Baracca, bereaved mother of a WW1 Italian fighter ace in who's squadron Enzo's brother Dino had served. The Countess evidently believed it was her son's personal talisman but legend has it that Baracca cut the 'cavallino rampante' as a trophy of war from the fabric fuselage of an unidentified German aircraft, apparently of Stuttgart origin, which he shot down and followed down at Udine in 1913. Not having his own racing team until 1930-something , Enzo didn't use the emblem until then when he added the Modena yellow background to make it the Ferrari icon we know today.

There's a bit of Porsche in every Ferrari!
