I was at the audio installation store today talking with one of the owners about a stereo for my car when he stated he worked for a company here in South California called Carelli International some time ago that chopped the tops off the 928 cars. I got talking to him some more and he stated the company did 14 conversions using steel for the upper body work. He also said a company locally tried to rip off their design but used fiberglass for the upper bodywork. I wasnt aware there were that many convertibles running around...You will love this Randy! Seems you are in good company. He said "Cher" still owns hers and it is white just like yours. Is there something your not telling us? Like maybe you and her are a thing and she lets you borrow her car? ( just kiddin ) Is yours one of the Carelli conversions?
I had a chance to speak w/ a gentelman that also had worked at Carelli. Simon or something. He told me that Carelli did the initial design but then sold kits to others wanting to do the conversion. I would imagine that there are some rip-offs. Mine just might be one of them (it has a f-glass rear upper, and was done by a company called Z-tech or Z-motors in L.A.) The paper trail that came w/ my car show a reciept for $10k for the chop job and it states "Carelli Conversion".
I have about 20 convertibles recorded so far, and may create a web site some day to list them. About 1/2 are in Europe.
