Default engine mounts

My 2 cents!!!!

I also am a member of the DIY engine mount replacement club, only I cheated a bit since I have a lift. It's still a 4 hour deal. My opinion is that the Anchor mounts are a bit stiff for street use. If you want the original smoothness, bite the bullet and get factory mounts. They are designed for the 928 and you will be VERY HAPPY with the results especially if you have been driving around with collapsed mounts. Check with the " Big Three" for deals.

An interesting perspective: IIRC, much of the early debate and discussion about use of the 'Ford' 2698H mounts was that
- they will soon fail
- they are not as heavy duty as the porsche units
- they were not designed to accomodate a vehicle with a massive torque tube, ........ ,, and so on
Has anyone else else had this experience??

Did you use the solid or liquid ones?

After doing an 89'(with the stock mounts) and doing an 83'(with the Anchors), I would say that the Anchors are a little smoother than stock. It's true that these were different cars with different engines, but the 83' is smoother at all RPMs with the anchors.

There is also far less engine rocking with the Anchors than with the factory mounts. The factory mounts are definitely softer, but they don't filter out vibration any better...

It's fair to say that the Anchors are an upgrade, not a downgrade. Only buy the factory mounts if: 1. You have money to burn 2. You want everything on your car 100% original(yes, that means original radio too). 3. You can't tell a bargain, from a rip-off.

I disagree, the factory ones are " softer" for a reason.

You may have a valid point, I am not saying that you are wrong. The fact that an alternative exists for the factory mount is in and of itself amazing.
I used the factory mounts because a friend had a new set and I bought them for far less than dealer price. To tell you the truth I was not aware that the Anchor mounts came in both solid and liquid filled. I do know one thing, when the factory mounts fail and collapse the resulting metal to metal contact causes a resonance that is quite annoying.

I have had the Anchor liquid mounts in my 85 for a years now with no problems. Pulled the mottor for other reasons last week and the mounts look just like they did when I put them in.

I will be doing the same on my 88 soon.

To have a valid comparison you would have to install the Anchors and factory mounts in the same car back to back......period. Too many unknown factors from car to car.

I would not go anywhere near saying that Anchors are an upgrade, still not enough evidence to convince me that they are even an equal.

1) Yes, I have money to burn where the GT is concerned.
2) Yes, *everything* on the GT is orignal including the radio, tires and
battery not.
3) Well if a bargain is using a product where its long term longevity is
still in question (a few years does not count IMO), and given the job to
replace the suckers takes hours or $$$ by a mechanic......I stuck with
the stock mounts.

By no means am I discouraging the use of the Anchors, indeed some amazing lower priced alternatives for many things on a 928 have been found, but don't frown on people who are more comfortable using factory parts........believe me, we have some of the nicest examples out there.
Long live them all.

You have some good points.

But one must also consider this. While it might be worth spending $600+ for motor mounts on a '90 GT, it's clearly not worth it to spend that kind of money on an early 16V car. For some one who just bought an early car (because of the low price in the first place), spending that money on mounts is simply not an option.

Agree, to most it will not be worth it, but to someone that owns a mint low mileage '78......it might be.......boils down to personal preference.

Devek still has factory mounts on sale for $195 each.....for the late cars though.......so it was $390 instead of $600.

I've been running the Anchor solids for about a year now, with no ill effects. I was tired of leaking stock Porsche hydraulic mounts. Several folks here on the list, including myself, have had premature failure of the Porsche mounts. To me it was an easy choice to switch to the Anchors, and then I thought, "Hey, the solids sure won't leak out the hydraulic fluid, so why not get them instead". $24.00 each from Rock Auto. I put them in and never looked back.
