I have seen a roll on latex used on cars at the Open Road races. You paint it on with a roller (it goes on practically clear) and then you simply peel it off later. There was a guy there that used it on a new GT2 last year, and he said it came off beautifully and the car had not a mark. I'll find out what I can about it and where to find it.

I'm not afraid of driving it! I just would rather it look as nice as possible. It's like life. I want to live as long and as happy as possible but I'd rather not have the wrinkles associated with growing older! Then again, Jimmy Buffett said,"wrinkles only go where the smiles have been..."

Cool

Just get the factory color touch-up paint from one of the big three, or the dealership. It will shrink, so apply heavy, and/or twice. You can clean excess or goofs with Prep-all. There are after market touchup pens and such. Some cleaning compound such as Meguires can smooth out rough edges. You will want to do this on the existing chips anyhow. Do a Rennlist search. It has been discussed before. Don't bother with clear coat. It adds too much height to the surface.

Yes.

I use racer's tape when on-track to protect the lights and leading surfaces. It comes off easily with no residue. I really don't think duct tape is a good thing for painted surfaces, especially when it gets wet and tacky. The RT will come off fine wet or dry.

As has been pointed out - bugs are easy to get off. However, rock chips are not. A lot depends upon the surface. OEM non-metallic paints hold up well. The metallic paints tend to be brittle and more-easily chipped. If the car has been repainted all bets are off. It could be better than OEM. It could be a lot worse.

You can decide for yourself how paranoid you want to be. Personally, I think the psychological roadtrip from paranoid to informed to comfortable is part of the experience of owning one (or more) of these wonderful cars.

Real bras have their drawbacks. The thread above starts to tell the story.
For a real bra you always have to put a clean (underside) bra on a clean waxed front end. You do not leave it on all the time. You do not leave it on when it is wet. Imagine sanding action on your paint when dust or dirt gets trapped - which it will after a few hundred miles of driving. Imagine wet sanding action when it is moist underneath. Oxidation. Mildew. etc.

As for me - I had a bad experience with a real bra on the '91 on the way back from OCIC-1 in 2000 and swore them off. I wish that I had not - as the metallic paint on the front end of my '91 is now worse for the wear after four years and 30k more miles. In hindsight I would not have used it all the time - but on long trips it would have saved a lot of rock chips. If I should happen to own - now or in the future - a 928 with a pristine front end I would - when it makes sense - use a real bra. When it doesn't make sense I would drive it without.

If I was in your shoes, I buy a roll of RT in the same - or closest match - color, use it for your trip home, then decide what you want to do for the long-term.

Worf,

Fantastic post. Thank you. I'll look locally to see if I can get something comparable to the tape that Pegasus offers. I won't have time to order and have it shipped in time for the weekend, I think. One more thing ifyou wouldn't mind. How many rolls do you recommend to sufficiently mask the shark nose?

Uh huh. Works if you've got red, black, or white. Iris blue? Amazon Green? Paint to sample? Good luck. (i.e. I spent four years looking for Amazon Green factory touch-up paint. Even had my wife wait outside a shop in Köln for the owner to show up one morning. Zippo! Finally found a site on the web... http://www.autovisuals.com/)

Still, I'd rather use a bra on long trips and save the time of touching up 100 rock chips every four years.

Like I said earlier, just when I thought I knew a little something about cars, you guys have to come running in and remind me that I don't!

Prep-all and MeGuires cleaning compound, eh? Sounds good to me.

Funny, the more I learn, the dumber I feel....(that could be my new signature)!

Cool

what's the color and mileage of the car? Paint chip repair can get into some complexity on metallic multi-color finishes and such.

FedEx Man! It's Monday. Pegasus supplies race teams. When they need parts they need parts right effin' now. Even el-cheap 2-day service will get it to you by Friday! Heck, have it drop-shipped to the PO's house.

One roll should do fine. Two strips on each mirror back. A couple behind the front wheel arches. Leading edge of the bumper cover. And a bit of the leading edge of the hood. Add tape until your paranoia is satisfied - or unit Your [Family] Unit cannot stand it

I've seen folks at the track spend an hour or more and just cover the car in tape. - helps when sons and daughters pitch in.

Part of the fun of your first Porsche is the initial paranoia. Have fun with it.

That roll on latex sounds nifty too.

Dave,

The link to an alternative site is one of the things I was talking about. Good tip. Does the dealer not supply touchup paint for obscure colors? When I have contacted them, they have had mainstream colors like metallic silver and dark blue.

Thom,

The mileage is @85K on a 1981 model. The car is very nice as is the paint. I'd like it to stay that way and still drive.

Worf,

I was actually looking at Pep Boys on-line and they seem to have a couple of versions. Racer Tape's web-site talks about certain types to avoid; they recommend Poly-U tape. I'll look locally and reserve the two-day as an "emergency." Man, I am paranoid!

However, I've always thought of myself as a custodian of these types of cars. It's my duty to take as good of care as possible. I'll croak one day but the car will still live on!

I have a 928 car bra that came with the car. When the previous owner ordered it, he didn't know to specify front spoilers. It's totally worthless to me.
It's not that heavy, give me your address and I'll 2nd day it to you.
