Jesse,

It's been a while since I did the CEL procedure to find the issue I was having but maybe this step by step from Theo Jenniskens' site will help.
If nothing else, he does list all of the trouble codes in a simple format.

https://jenniskens.livedsl.nl/technical/Tips/2/MyTip256.htm

To display the stored diagnostic trouble codes through the "Check Engine" lamp, proceed as follows:
  • With engine off, turn ignition switch to On position.
  • Depress accelerator pedal completely for 3-5 seconds.
  • Wait for "Check Engine" lamp to flash, then release accelerator pedal. ECU will begin to flash diagnostic trouble codes.
  • Fully depress accelerator pedal to display next diagnostic trouble code. When trouble DTC 1000 is displayed, no additional DTC's are stored are memory.

Good luck and please report back with your result.

@Schocki--"Digit dash has nothing to do with CEL. CEL on only tells you, that there is a fault code stored in either engine ECU.
Details need to be read with a KTS or similar."

If you are correct, then my whole question of addressing error codes without the Hammer or some equivalent is moot.

After reading the Diagnosis Instrument Cluster '89 document, I'm afraid you might be correct. Page 5 states that new software code K21, which apparently was introduced during the 89MY, has no fault data memory. However, on page 11, one of the switch displays (switch 06) is for the Cat monitor, which I assume would indicate problems with the O2 sensor. Perhaps this is an oblique way of determining O2 sensor health? I'm still confused.

Would love to hear more opinions on this from the collective. Thanks again.

The CAT light is for Japan market cars only. It is hooked up to a small ECU with thermocouples in the cat itself. AFAIK there is a law in Japan, that the driver has to be warned of a hot cat. Serves as a reminder not to park the car on a flammable surface, like dry grass.
