Default pod question

I am working on a 87 auto this weekend for a friend,

The question is, are the gear indicators in the dash supose to shut off when the lights are turned on?? This car is just about as perfect as I have ever seen but my 88 dont work this way neither does my 85.

I have traced back on the circut board to a small relay that controls the power to the indicators. Thought I would get some more input form someone that may have been there done that before spending more time tracing the board.

Thanks.

no, the lights stay on to show you what gear youre in. How would you know which gear you are in unless the gear light was on? Would you have to turn your headlights on?
