Question Atf

Having just dealt with the transmission-pan gasket leak, I now have to replenish the thing with ATF. Anyone know how much I'll need to add after the thing sat for a week with the pan off, but didn't touch the torque convertor?

Brian, How did you resolve the leak issue?

I'm not sure that I have......... what I've done is to build a cork-gasket to fit between the original and the transmission casting. We'll see. But I have to put the ATF back to see if it stays....

This is getting silly!

It still will not seal around the transmission pan gasket!

I took a straight-edge and found that the inner edges of the middle-bolt curved portion of the gasket face, are higher than the same relative portion on the front/back face(s).

Can this be right? It sure doesn't look right, but it also does not look like something that could get "altered" either.

WTF!!

Hard to visualize: are you referring to the machined faces of the casting? - any pics?
Does the pan fit snuggly without a gasket, or is there an obvious 'high' spot for example?
One thing to try possibly is to make a "gasket" out of modeling clay/'play dough' stuff - and lightly install to get an impression of the contact surfaces: more precisely, the lack of contact. Might tell you something useful ....

The leak seems to be originating at the passenger-side front corner. I have turned the edges of the bolt-flanges down, and the leak is diminished but it still persists.

When shimming your pan have you always done the whole circumference or have you tried spot shimming as well? Mike.

Brian,

Are you sure it is the pan leaking?? I just went through an ordeal with my beast & the leak I had was due to there being no O-ring around the kickdown cable insert into the tranny. The kickdown cable is right in that area you say is leaking... a new O-ring solved my problem. Just a thought!

Brian get a hydraulic jack and a small piece of 2x4. put it under the pan on the area where it is leaking- with the car in neutral or in gear wait for the leak. Then start adding pressure to the pan. If the pressure from the wood does -not slow or stop the leak I believe you do -not have a gasket problem. Something else is mysteriously wrong! Good Luck! Mike

Good Idea...... Mike! That's next for the week-end.

Bill, I checked all the other fittings and stuff. No other leak sites found afre brake-clean spraying the whole area. You can actually see the ATF start to seep at the gasket/tranny interface if you lay there for 2-3 minutes with the engine running.

Hey Mike,
Is that the same piece of 2x4 and jack used in your now famous and unmentionable named method for_______-___ ATF fluid into the transmission??
