Default SoCal Evening Tour Tonight! Hwy 2 Pasadena area

Joe Serio's brother Ron is visiting from Texas, and has a day to spare for some 928 stuff. One of the things discussed over the past few weeks has been a little TSD driving test on Highway 2 (Angeles Crest Highway) from La Canada north. Because of afternoon traffic and heavy patrol issues, it's probably better for us to go in the evening rather than the middle of the day. Like Tuna canyon and the Malibu mountain areas, the racer-wannabe's and scooter pilots tend to be in the way a lot in the morning. Because of the short notice, this will be a pre-run only, with no TSD driving skills measured. Just a fun ride!

So here's the plan:

Gather on Angeles Crest Highway above La Canada for a depart at about 6PM. From there, we will tour north, past the Mt Wilson turnoff and head over towards the ski areas. As the sun goes below the mountaintops at around 7:30 or so, we'll reverse course and end up back where we started.

Angeles Crest Highway is easily accessed from the 210 freeway, between the 134 (Ventura) freeway and the top end of the 2 (Glendale) Freeway. From south, you can take the 5 north to the 2 north, go a little east on the 210, and left up the hill on the Angeles Crest Highway exit.

From the east, the 210 freeway works well, as do the 10 and 60. Depending on how far you are driving, you can get north to the 210 or come up the 5 from the downtown L.A. area.

From the west, the 101 joins the 134, continue on the 134 through Glendale, north on the 2 (Glendale) fwy, east on the 210, and same directions as above.

A couple miles above the 210 on Angeles Crest, look for Starlight Crest Drive and the La Canada Country Club golf course on your right. We'll form up on Starlight Crest, and go north from there at about 6pm.

This is --not-- a race or even a high-speed driving event. Speed limits are 45 and 55 on the different sections, and lesser cars strain to maintain that average through the various sections. There's a very real possibility that we will 'run up' on slower traffic, and trust that Maude and Gertrude will take pity on us and use a turnout. Such are the risks. Since this is dinnertime for most folks, we should be OK.

For those that choose, we can gather at a local eatery after the drive for a snack and discussion, or we can convene at our home in Glendale, just off highway 2 at the 134 interchange. I'll bring some maps/directions in case we decide to do that.

I'll have my cell on all day at eight-one-eight 472 8868, but have a meeting this morning from about 9 to 11 so you may get voicemail during that time. I will call you back if you leave a message, and will check e-mail and this board for responses.

Remember, casual evening tour, no special requirements, just show up and have fun driving. It is of course not limited to 928's either, so if you have a friend with a different Porsche, they are also welcome to come along.

See you this evening!
