Default 928 4 speed?

Hello,
I recently purchased an 84 928S 5 speed. She's a beauty with only 120k but has bad 2nd gear syncro. I might have to wait a bit before I can splurge on a $2500 rebuild so I thought of another solution:
To avoid a crunch from 1st to 2nd, I've been starting in 2nd most of the time (the engine seems to have plenty of torque and I try to minimize clutch slipping...). I don't mind the loss in off-the-line performance (I don't do any stoplight GP!) and I figure this will help avoid further damage to the 2nd gear, am I correct? I realize clutch wear will probably be a little premature but a clutch is still cheaper than a 2nd gear set, right?
So, I've been driving the car like a 4 speed with the regular H pattern! What do you guys think? Any recommendations? Also, any recommendation for a good mechanic in Orange County for a tranny rebuild?
Thanks for reading.

Why not do the 1 to 3 shift...less wear on clutch when starting..and enough pull in 3 to keep on rolling...

Later,

I would agree with Tom , use 1st gear wind it up a bit then shift to third . That will be less abusive to the clutch .

Thanks, I did try that first but found myself going 1st to 5th a few times! Is there any linkage adjustment to reduce the vagueness?

There is no adjustment BUT the forward angular joint and rear shift coupler both can wear .

I was shocked recently when I drove a friend's '84 5spd, at two things. One, how much torque she had in 1 and 2nd. Two, I was shocked at how terrible shifting was. Grinding gears and fast shifts were required. And vague ... I thought my S4 was a bit vague, but now she feels like a gated shifter ..... I was impressed with one thing ... the way the reverse gear is locked out. Unlike my S4, which springs out of the 1st-R plane but can be forced back, the '84 box had me shifting right back to where reverse had been, only to find 2nd. Very cool.
