I have a hatch on my car with a VIN that is different than the rest of my car. I would like to know some history about this hatch replacement but I don't want to $40 know about the history. I think I am going to have to breakdown and just pay unless you get some tips on free VIN searches.

I haven't given up on a free source to see if the 89 GT is a total loss just yet. Thank you very much for the offer.

I don't have any definitive info, but there's no good scenario under which an '89 GT loaned its rear hatch to another car. I don't know what happens when you buy a CARFAX on a car that's been totalled and dismantled, but I'd bet that's what happened to WP0JB0927KS861198

I am sure you are right. I am mostly curious about when it was totaled and where. Just having some fun playing detective to figure out the history of this car. This '89 had 64,201 on it in 1994 and in 2024 it has 98,000 miles.
There were never any accidents reported and no visual signs of damage. I would love to know the when, where, why of how my car came to need a replacement hatch. I am guessing the glass broke and it was cheaper/easier to put on another black hatch than to find glass.

Do you know anyway I can get a carfax on a 1979 928 since the vin is only 10 characters?

CARFAX only covers 17 digit VINs, and they didn't exist until 1991, so they will have nothing for '79.

For checking whether a car has a salvage title, an NVMTIS search might be illustrative:

https://vehiclehistory.bja.ojp.gov/n...egular%20basis.

Do you have any recommended places to get a NVMTIS search?

There's a link on the site I linked to the approved providers:
