Question Fuel Vent Cob Job

In an ongoing effort to find a gas odor origin in the rear of my car, I've pulled the gas tank to look for leaks. Last year I pulled it and changed all the hoses between the tank and the overflow tank in the fender. The large hose connecting the top of the tank to the filler was cracked and was leaking. Thought that would fix it. Wrong! While the tank was out I noticed the vent line that exits at the center of the rear bumper did not have an end piece attached. Instead it has the piece shown in the attached picture (I hope its attached). This piece looks like a valve of some kind with another line running to the front of the car. Tracing this line I found it connected directly to the charcoal canister in the front. There is no "y" connector. Only one line going into the canister and this one coming out leading to the fitting in the rear of the car.

Does anybody know if this is a good or a bad thing?? Is it doing any harm to the car? Could it somehow account for the fumes at the rear? (I pressurized the gas tank and the overflow tank and checked them completely with a soapy water solution. No apparent leaks.)

Thanks.

O K , first being Euro it probably was Federalized to some extent when brought into the U S . The charcoal canister was added BUT no Y and no provision for the engine to inhale all the fumes to recharge the charcoal . Your deccription of Cob Job is accurate and does account for the fuel vapors . Making it right will take some additional engineering . It will not harm the car unless you put a match to the vent .

Jim,
Thanks for the reply. I guess once I get the gas tank back in I can head under the hood and start replumbing the system. I'll be sure to keep matches away from the vent!
