LJK Setright on the 928

Moazambique,
I had a business relationship for a few years in the mid/late 80's with a pretty well known Porsche guy at Weissach who owned and drove a 911SC - named Hans Mezger (widely considered one of the two best engine designers of the 20th century). At lunch one day I asked Hans what 'used' Porsche I should buy. Pretty long discussion by Hans and an engineering associate, but the summary was: "Buy a 928 or a 911SC - they are the two best cars we've made to date". I've owned seven 928's since that conversation. Similar to @bubba928, I tracked S4's for about 15 years, including 2 automatics. Similar vintage 911 drivers were frequently quite surprised that an 'old man' driving a 928 could pass them on the track (even with the automatic!). The car was far more capable on the track than I was!

Hans was responsible for the original 911 6 cylinder engine which debuted in USA in 1964. At the time I was meeting with him, he was the head of Engine Development at Weissach. He was still involved in every engine development through the GT3 (which is appropriately referred to as the Mezger engine). A very humble, congenial, and wonderful man to get to know. I felt very privileged to do so.

PK68,
Yes, Hans was deeply involved in all Porsche racing engines including the incredible 12 cylinder of the 917 (there is one of those engines completely dis-assembled and on display in the Porsche museum - VERY impressive) . Their involvement in Le Mans racing with cars like the 962 was where our work with him was focused.

that typically only happens in groups of 911 guys. Notably, the 911 has never won any significant design awards while the 928 has. Attend a 928 event and you’ll get the opposite prevailing opinion. Personally, no 911 iteration comes close in beauty to the 928 in my opinion (I started a thread on it here, in fact - I think the 928 is the most beautiful car ever made). As an active member of the local PCA club ( past President among other duties), I find most “Porsche “ people, I.e., 911 guys, have a very narrow view of beautiful car design. They tend to like the 911, and not much else.
Just three of my favourite designs for example are the Lamborghini Espada, Ferrari 365 GTC/4 and Ford Granada Coupe so I don't exactly gravitate to the conventionally beautiful! I like quirks; parts of a design that don't work too well and make the car stand out as interesting. That's what the 928 design says to me, it stands out as interesting and (early cars) very 1970s concept car in appearance..which is my favourite decade in car design!

I started reading LJK's articles for CAR when I was 9 years old living in London, I bought ever CAR magazine from 1980 to about 1984 and then sporadically up until the early '90s. The editorial staff of CAR mag. was first class with Gavin Green and Steve Cropley amongst others.
I still have all these magazines today, some 40+ years later so they must have really meant the world to me to cart them around from country to country and continent to continent.
I will have to go back and dig through all the 928 articles featured in CAR, they were particularly enamored when the S2 made its debut and now had 300-hp.
@8cyl - I'm with you...love the Espada and the 365 GTC/4...handsome and timeless cars.

@8cyl count me as another fan of both the Espada and the GTC/4!
