Played with a 930 yesterday
But I won't post results as a few here have pooh-poohed me before, because they just don't believe, no matter what, that the 928 is a Porsche capable of holding its own .... anyway, what a rush!! I particularly enjoyed the fact that the 930 driver was likely a bit shocked that he wasn't able to tear the 928 up and throw it over his shoulder. It is very interesting to see the 930 move when that turbo spools up, and maybe more interesting is the sound of the engine .... low--low compression and turbo whistle, and a lot of pops. Must be quite a handful to drive
I love my car!

Heinrich,
What are the "pop" sounds? See Terrible Tony's avatar...doesn't he have a white 930 in Brucie's mouth? HA! Neat cars to be sure....but demanding in almost every respect.
Cheers,
Tim

Tim I assume that must be the wastegate popping like a bubblegum machine .... Man I think that a 930 is such a classic I'd love to own one just for the history of it, not to mention the raw forced air crush .... but I am reminded that for a normally-aspirated Porsche to be able to even THINK of keeping up, is ultra-impressive. I've owned many n/a Porsches and not one of the others would stand a chance. Neither would they even think of standing a chance against the King of the Hill

actually Heirich, the 928S4 was within 1 sec of the 0-60 time of the top 911 model (930) and its top speed was alot higher, and we all know in the top end is where these cars come alive
however the 930 was and still is alot easier to mod to get alot more horse out of it,

Lizard, you said it. The difference between 4.9 and 5.7 seconds is small enough that driver input makes a far greater difference. This particular driver was clearly up for straight-line drags but also kept her revs low till she picked up. Erkka, thanks for the movs .... very cool to hear and see them on the same piece of track :-) Interesting how different each one sounds.

Erkka and Heinrich,
Very interesting stuff...thanks so much. Enjoyed seeing the vids....boy, that white 951 was pretty quick, eh? Impressive cars for the money. Also, the GT3 seemed pretty mild mannered compared to the 930s.
I too love the 930 but probably will end up with an 87-89 911 Carerra (non-turbo) one of these days. I would like to own at least one air-cooled P-Car at some point...
Best,
Tim

Good video clips Erkka.
Heinrich, I really don't need your numbers to be convinced. - a torque biased V8 is a tough customer on the street anyday. The track may be different ...
Where you say, "I assume that must be the wastegate popping like a bubblegum machine " - it could be, but in Erkka's 1st clip, the popping occurs on throttle lift off approaching each apex: For an overrun sound that is truely refined and soul-stirring, you need to know someone with a 5-sp 16v 928 with a hollow cat. I don't personally know of a car like that, , but if I come across one, I'll let you know!

I agree with Garth. The sound in the first clip is not the wastegate. The best way to describe the wastegate sound it seems is to listen to the GT1 which chirps two or three times as the driver shifts at each gearchange. Otherwise the exhaust is relatively quiet.

Metallic red 930 has pop-of valve that dumps excess boost directly to atmosphere. On stock models it goes to exhaust.

Well, I am amazed because the sounds of the red 930 exhaust sound like exhaust not a pop off valve, unless the added air is causing small burns that create the pops. Guess I also need to research more.
