I have an '86.5 automatic. It starts out in 1st gear from rest. It shifts seamlessly out of 1st fairly soon unless more than light throttle is applied; in that case, it shifts hard and crisply into second. I love it that way. Unfortunately, it doesn't do as well from third to fourth when it slips unless better than light throttle is applied. It also has a hesitation into reverse which takes much too long. Time for an overhaul at 150k miles.
Question: I have heard that this box is unique to '85 - '86 cars, and that later cars start in 2nd and then need to be kicked down into first. I need to choose between overhauling this box or installing a later ('89) box with a lower final drive ratio ( ). Does anyone know for sure if the '89 does what mine will do??
MY '89 S4 would start in 1st if I manually shifted it to 2nd, there is no 1st. If I was stopped and shifted to second I could then shift to 3rd or D and it would still start in 1st. HTH
Thanks Jim. That answers my question, which is should I rebuild or take the used box with the lower rear end. I really like the no brainer start in first.
