Yes you can just get "regular" plates, however in MI the cost for registration would be based on the Retail Value of the car, so it could be hundreds of $ / year, every year!

I just heard about the new law in MI two weeks ago, I've never had any issues driving my historic plated cars around but never used them to commute.

Thank for posting,

Right, but it's not some conspiracy to keep old cars off the road. It's a discount for people who collect cars to not have to pay for a full tag for each one.

Yup been doing the same for some time. Lots of good things about living here as the above have said, including livable traffic issues, low population growth, and a phased in no state income tax, again, for retireds with pensions.

Hi Mike,

The OP also reminded us that Michigan has "Authentic" plates available that give classic car owners forever registration for $35 dollars. Outside of the full use all summer they can be driven for mechanical things like giving them exercise! Cops have never pulled me over even driving the CocaCola track car on the roads late in the fall! Not sure what there is to complain about!

The Cheeseheads in Wisconsin have it right for sure! It looks like collector cars are being protected in many states!

All good!

I just drove through Columbus yesterday and, Wow! The growth is amazing! See you this summer!
