I asked him to listen for the fuel pump while cranking and the fuel pump was silent.

I suggested he make a fuel pump relay jumper to rule out the fuel pump. This is a new pump from Roger so I doubt that is the problem.

For the uniformed what triggers the fuel pump in the 1980?

He has already replaced the green wire, sourced from Roger.

More information: As of now the car will start and run for 5 min and die. Maybe that's a clue.

Runs with fuel pump relay jumpered. Without it will not even start.

1980 cars, the fuel pump relay is only triggered when the engine is cranking or running. I would suspect the ignition brain or L-jet brain at this point, or a poor connection somewhere between the systems. The car still dies after a few minutes with the fuel pump relay bypasses, or continues to run normally now?

Did all the wiggling wires, pulled connectors on the computers and dexoxited them, and also fuse panel but did not take it apart. I then tried another fuel pump relay and it started and ran for a hundred miles perfectly over three days then left me stranded. I jumped the fuel pump relay and it runs fine. When I get a chance will get to the back of the fuse panel and clean up grounds and fuse connectors. Thanks for your great advice. david

usually you will have a bad ground to one of the relays

So, this car is coming to me next week. Went from running with fuel pump relay jumpered to runs for 5 minutes and now not starting to not starting at all.

I'll start with some basic diagnosis and add my findings here.

Kevin

Just to rule this out please remove the fuel tank sender and see if there is any rust in the bottom of the tank ,
if so then you need to replace the fuel sender.

Kevin to find this issue, Also I suspect a bad connection at the CE panel ,
get the car warmed up,
then with it running go to the CE panel and start wiggling the FP, FI relays first then wiggle the rest of them.
then wiggle the fuses .
First shoot them with your IR gun to find out where the bad connections are as they will be hot.
