The Flash / The Wave
You're damned if you do, and you're damned if you don't.
For the first year of Porsche ownership back in 2000, I flashed or waved at every P car that I saw. Occassionally, I would get someone to turn their head. More often, people would glare at me like I was some kind of psyco. I was persistent, however, and I kept on going thinking that eventually, I would get a positive acknowledgment in the form of a flash or a wave back. My enthusiasm lasted for about a year. Never did I get a flash or a wave back. I gave up.
The other day, I was making a left hand turn and I saw a nice red 944 waiting at the intersection facing me (coming the other way from the street that I was turning onto). As I was making my turn and going past them, a quick, friendly wave came shooting out the window. By the time I realized what had happened, I was by them going in the other direction. I felt so badly for not acknowledging the wave. I wanted to, but it was too late.
Moral of the story. Even if it takes 4 more years, I am going to flash or wave at every damn P car that I see until either someone mistakes me for a wacko and shoots me, or somebody gives me some love back!

I wonder if this 'wave' syndrome is weather related. Up here in the tundra, I'd say 90% of the P cars I see acknowledge me and visa versa. I think it may have something to do with our short driving season here. There's not too many P-cars on the road, when you see another one, you know it's someone as stoked to be driving his car as you are!!!

Cameron,
Interesting story. An age old topic here, eh?
In my experience, I've concluded that almost anyone driving a PCar that is 10 years old (or more) likely will flash the lights at or wave to other PCar drivers in their general area of the road. When considering the newer models / owners....it has been a crap shoot for me. I've had 996 & 993 owners acknowledge me when in the Shark but Boxter and Cayenne owners uniformly do not respond. I don't go out of my way to acknowledge folks in the newer models...nothing personal but often times they seem to be another type of owner / enthusiast. The exceptions are likely to be PCA members. My guess is that many Boxter (987?) and Cayenne owners are NOT PCA members (i.e., enthusiasts). Folks driving 928s, older 911 (1988 or older), 924, 944/951/968. Porsche owner/driver <> enthusiast | some are style conscious posers. IMHO, of course
OK....back to work. Where in Florida are you located?

On a related note, I've long pondered why it is that, despite the fact that my shark is my usual daily driver (except rainy/snowy days, etc.), I'd guess that more than half the time I encounter another shark, I'm driving another car!
I think I finally have a theory...
When I'm driving the shark, I'm driving so much faster than when I'm driving the other cars, that I'm on the road for less time. For example, assume you drive your shark for half the number of trips you take and your Trabi the other half, and also assume you drive the shark twice as fast (well, if the other car is really a Trabi, perhaps you'd drive the shark 10 times as fast...). Then the shark will only be on the road 25% as much as the Trabi, right?
And then note that as your shark-to-other-car velocity ratio increases, this problem grows. So, I know it's a bummer, but that means that as you approach the speed of light in your shark, you'll rarely get a chance to see another shark and the wave/flash issue will become academic. Perhaps a venturi could help solve this problem, or maybe it's a question of contact patch...

My guess is that the same theory goes for some of the Harley people, as goes for owners of newer Porsches.
They own them as a status symbol.
They are not all enthusiasts about bikes in general, or about riding.
I always laughed at my cousin's assertion that MG owners
wave their tool boxes at each other, as a different kind of
comaradery.

I think there is something in Ed's theory- sort of a new theory of rel-activity (e.g. if everyone was doing the same relative activity then everyone would be in a 928) & there would be no time to wave to anyone.

If the wheels have 'our' badge
on the front, I wave.
If I get a response, fine. If not, well,
I've gone past them in my cool car.
Too bad for them; their loss, eh?

Tim,
I am in Broward County in South Florida. You should have made the drive down to Sebring for the DE. I was the only 928 there. I had a great time. A father and son came by pit lane at the end. Dad said that according to his son, my car was the coolest one of them all. The boy must have been about 12. We chatted a bit. It was nice because there was alot of serious iron there including GT3's, TTs, 996s, 993s, 964s, 968s, 944s, 924s you get the picture. But the old 928 was the 'coolest' of them all!
Mark N,
What part of the tundra are you at? I was born in the tundra, so I am curious.

I've had waves from all sorts of Porsches, from beat-to-**** 924's (Actually, most 924's I see on the street are pretty well, kept, its the original 911's that are more often obvious projects) to sparkling new 996 turbos, but inconsistently. I must say, however, 928 drivers go that extra mile to give the wave to another, sometimes even if it means crossing four lanes of rush hour traffic and getting off at the wrong exit!

I drive my 968 daily, and believe it or not i've been getting at least one wave a day from other pcars. All kinds of p-cars, i see more boxsters out in my area and i've been getting waves from them, like today as a matter of fact lol. I always give a wave and usually get one in return.
