Default OT: 944S2 Cabriolet to buy or not?

I came across a 1990 944 S2 Cabriolet while at the gym and am looking for some advice on how to procede.

Here's the back story. I just bought my second 928 (the '85 S2) and am in a bind as to what to do with the first. In an ideal world, I would refurbish it and pass it on to the wife. However, the state of things is that the project will cost a great deal and ultimately leave me with a very nice '81 that I would be reluctant to give over. The more I think about it, the more "track beast" keeps creeping in. The other thing is that it's a 5-speed and my wife doesn't like the 'manly' clutch action while driving it.

The 944 is a 5-speed Cabriolet in good condition. 125k on the odometer, black interior (nice), white paint (original with some chips), top is in great shape, negligible rust (it was a PA car), and mostly original throughout. I'd have to go over it a little better and talk to the guy for more info, but it looks good enough to consider. The guy wants $10,500. At a glance I wouldn't go more than $10,000 and that's pushing it.

The reason I'm posting here is mostly that I know many of you have experience in the matter and the attitude of the 928 forum is more prone to produce constructive advice. I'll cross post in the 944 forum to be sure.

I don't understand. Doesn't the fact that you have 10K to spend on a 944 mean you have 10K to spend on a 928 ?

I also like these cabs and have considered buying in the past. My conclusion, however, was to lay down a bit more cash and get the 968 'version'. More refined, more power with variocam and better looking IMHO. Also, the 968 has the 928 style headlights - worth the extra cash right there!

IMHO...what Jim_H and Cameron said Keep lookin'...
968s can be had for bargains now and they're nice cars...you wife would probably love one...very refined machine. I considered the 951 and 944S2 for a while...but decided on my all time fave...the 928s4. On the other hand...if you can buy the cabriolet and flip it for a profit...more power to you.
Cheers,
Tim

Well I knew that was coming, however my wife doesn't care for automatics and quality five speeds aren't exactly falling out of the sky around here (I've got two of them). Besides, there is the issue of the 'manly' clutch.

I'd definitely prefer a 968, and I think she would too. They have the same problem though, none here for sale. What's the going rate?

On the flipside, I'm pretty confident I could get this thing for a lot less after I inspect and drive it. Bear in mind, this is going to be for the wife. If it were me, I'd dump the $$ into either Shark and forget about it all together.

Tim they are very wonderful and rare cars. 10.5 is a good price. However .... I cannot live with the major power loss. Maybe for the wife, or the occasional sunny drive oon a Sunday afternoon .... I sold both my 944 and S, and have driven a good number of S2's ....

Incidently this is intended to be an anniversary gift. The fourth anniversary calls for a traditional gift of flowers or fruit and a modern gift of an appliance. We've got more frickin' appliances than we need already (the Dyson Vacuum was the latest...and coolest) so I figured her very own Porsche would be a good idea.

Also, she's an early Mustang snob and despite the fact there was a pretty nice little '65 with a 289 down a few spots, she wasn't interested. She likes the Porsche.

The anniversary is in a couple weeks (on a Sunday no less). If it checks out all right, she could have it by the end of the month.
