Good write up Adam. Love to be able to drive one someday. Always have lusted after a Testarossa or F-40.

The Ferrari engines V-8 actually run like two 4 cylinder engines which gives them a different sound from an american v-8 with the burble , burble . Somewhat like a Harley the firing order gap gives a unique sound . The 3.5 liter 5 valve per cylinder 355 engine makes 380 Hp at 8,250 redline is 8,500 and peak torque at 6,000 rpm some 268 ft lbs at the ENGINE The old very brown 1980 928 just happens to be at 265 ft lbs of torque at about 4,000 rpm . Both cars weigh around 3,000 lbs . That said the Ferrari LOOKS way bitchin but in reality is not all that fast and as Adam so clearly points out you HAVE to rev it to make anything happen . I did drive an old 308 a bit (hotwired it to get it started ) and was really not at all impressed and really worried about something breaking .

Their crankshaft throws are in a flat plane, rather than the cross-plane of just about every other type of V8.

The buslike rake of the steering wheel and slowness of the ratio sounds extremely reminiscent of my friend's Alfa and former boss' FIAT... must be an Italian thing.

It is a fair comparison, I think. The original sticker price of each car was probably within an order of magnitude, both are V8 powered near-supercars.

but, but it's a Ferrari....(an owner will tell you when all else fails) The same friend who let me drive his 355 F1 Spyder bought a Euro model 360 Spyder 6spd. Euros are a bit cheaper but you have to register them out of state. It's more a mindset than anything.

The only Ferraris that interest me are the 512TR's and F40's. Otherwise I'm partial to Lamborghini's.
