Default Pristine '83 928S for Sale

My friend Glenn is selling his '83 928 S. It was previously mine so I'm helping him sell it. The car was a "one family" owned car when I purchased it. All service records exist from the first oil change. I purchased the car in 1998 and it served me well through March '04 as a daily driver. It is a steal at $7,995.

This is a beautiful car with an excellent service history. A brief summary of the major service items is:

1998:
-All new water hoses and spark plug wires installed
- The engine top-end was resealed
- A new speedo installed because it was intermittently cutting out. When removed 56,928 was displayed, I decided to keep the ZERO miles on the new one (it felt like a new car). It currently reads 35,xxx miles; I'd estimate the car has around 100,000 miles on it.

1999:
- The cam belt & water pump were replaced (about 30,000 miles ago).
- The very important "steel ball joint carriers" upgrade installed in

2004 service
- The torque converter carrier bearings were replaced Jan. '04
- A/T was serviced in February '04
- Oil & filter just changed in June '04.
- The sunroof was recently removed, cleaned, greased and a new switch installed.

The brakes & rotors are in great shape, tires almost new.

The paint is original "Kiln Red" and interior dark brown dash/light brown carpeting/seats. The interior is excellent shape; the original carpeting looks new and the floor mats are new Lloyd mats. The headlamps are upgraded 7" H4s. It has the on-off "!" tail lamp warning foible that is common with these cars.

I have many pictures and a complete Excel spreadsheet that outlines all the service. Send questions to my email at info@electronikrepair.com

Looks like a hansome car.

Since you are looking for comments.....based on what I see on ebay, 8 grand is not a "steal" for an '83.......In addition the car needs the front of the engine serviced......also, a knowledgable buyer will want to look at the flex plate. Maybe auto trader is a good route to go to get a better feel for the right market price.

I like the color, the interior sounds tempting. Do you have anymore pictures?

Another 30K to go before t-belt service on this non-interference engine. Nice condition 83 auto with 100K miles? Maybe $5K or whatever the market will bear. Good luck.

Just purchased another 83 with 47K on it for $5,500 . Seems to be the going price about now. Hope you find someone to take as much care as it seems this one has had.

Well I suppose since there is no "harm" done with a lost TB (except the possibility of a major inconvenience) you could run the belt till it lets go.....it is 5 years old though. Maybe alright for a weekender....not my idea of maintenance rules for a car that goes further than the corner store though.... Especially one that costs 8 grand.....

Now if it was an 88, that would be a different thing al together. At least there is a good cost benefit ratio......

The car still has a bunch of potential and seems (per advertised) to have been cared for. I also hope it makes someone a happy owner.

I always seam to be on the other side of the planet on these threads. You find the right person, and the car is as nice as you say, $8k will sell, especially around here.

I know a guy that just paid $6k for a rough ex-race 928 with:
no head lights
no heater
no ac
paint is excellent, excpet for one fener where the balloon tires smacked the fender
racing seat etc....
He's turning it back to a street car

I also know of two other pre 85 928's that sold around here for over $8k. They were within reason as nice as this car.

In my humble (but usually not in agreement with the group) opinion is:
The "going" or blue book rate gets you a good driver that shows wear, and might need a bit of "normal" work. Everything that is better:
Low miles
Excellent paint
"like new" interior etc..
Should add to the price.

I know I could sell mine for around $5k - $6k once the engine is back together. This car looks much better than mine in the pics.

I think we are all on the same "side" in that we would like to see respectable values for our cars, and premiums for the ones well card for.

(No hedge fund guys as owners, only buyers have that motivation).

So I have no personal interest in talking down the price of any 928.

Numbers beyond reason, beg for a response though, lest one believe the lack of response implies agreement with the arguement.....

Plus, we gather here for counsel and entertainment.......sometimes it is hard to decide which one we are being presented with......

......also, a knowledgable buyer will want to look at the flex plate.

Gretch, the flex plate issue is not an issue for 1984 and earlier 928s. They have a C-clamp and shim system that maintains the flex plate tension.

This car has a very extensive service history, with receipts going back to the first oil change at 1100 miles.

I would put the service record of Rich's former shark up against everyone here. I saw it on this shark myself and its mind boggling how much money, time, and care went to maintain this shark.

$8,000 for it isn't much to pay considering it had 20-30,000? in maintance. Compared to the 5,500 dollar shark on autotrader or ebay that comes with little if any service records you'd be better off with the long history that comes with this shark. You know the condition the replacement for just about every major part on it.

Gretch do you have an excel spreadsheet of every repair, upgrade, oil change, TB replacement on your GT? This car has service logs you dream of having when shark shopping.

Like Hacker said many people paid alot more for alot less in their sharks and I'd stay 8,000 firm on this one.

Red, I have such records and more for my '89 GT........and I ment no disrespect with my clinical questions............This sounds like a car deserving of a premium price because of the care given to it by the owners. That having been said, I personally would want to see a new timing belt on the car, because of the age of the one currently installed.

FWIW, the age of the timimg belt is what jumped out at me first, then I went to check prices and saw he was asking a premium. Neither one of these things make the car a bad car.

Hey I would like to think I could get a premium value on my 89 GT.....but I am realistic enough to understand that not everyone would agree....

It does seem fair though, when an owner is looking for a premium valuation, there will be more scrutiny to the condition of the car. this one may be excellent....but it needs a timing belt......not a minor item to the wrench challenged.

BTW, Rich, thanks for the technical lesson on the flex plate issue. I have only a passing interest in it because I drive a 5 speed, but am mindful of the damage one not properly adjusted can do to the engine.

Finally, I hope the car sells for a ton of money..........(we all "ok" now?)

I have to say that pictures don't do Kiln Red Metallic justice. That is an absolute gorgeous color in person. I had the oportunity to see one in person this last April, a fellow PacNW brought it to the TA. Beautiful!!

Gretch I think the price is fair, not over the top.

I wish I would have landed upon a shark like this instead of the one I currently own when I was looking.

If it wasn't such a pain in the **** I'd repaint my 5sp that color. I really dig on the red metallics.

The old saying for real estate is Location , Location , location ............for OLD cars and 928s are now ALL OLD cars .....Condition , Condition , Condition is the key . Living with a maintained and loved 1983 for $8,000 is usually going to be a much better experience than with an abused , neglected 1993 GTS for $28,000 . There are also some 1983 cars which might only be worth $1,000 . Condition , Condition , Condition ; look for a car that was loved AND maintained . While saving a project car can be admirable and an interesting journey do it because you like the experience not because it gets you a nice 928 for less money than buying a good one to start with .
